I started my carrier in the process automation business back in 1985 at Fisher Controls at a time when hard disks had to be carried by two men and a DCS controlling a plant with up to 10,000 tags had 4 MB of RAM. Then the first PCs showed up in our office and were also used for the DCS Software. Text editors could be used to write system configuration code and compile it. That was the time when we had to work day and night shifts during FAT. The code compilation and download generation took for hours and compilation errors from the day work were corrected in the evening and verified in the morning at 4 a.m. to be sure everything is right and could be downloaded to the controllers before the customer came in next morning. My first projects as Systems Engineer were a continuous process extraction plant at Nattermann in Cologne and a chlorine gas and a de-mineralized water plant for GE Plastics in Bergen-op-Zoom.
