As a Brand Strategist I am responsible for generating ideas and creating online solutions for global brands across a broad spectrum of Microsoft platforms including MSN, Xbox and Mobile.I spent a year at Microsoft as part of my placement for my degree. This year was incredibly valuable, learning in a dynamic environment with a diverse portfolio of clients. Here I was able to apply all of my knowledge from my academic learning to real world brands and projects, supporting the current team with fresh insights and ideas. As part of my role I was responsible for generating ideas and creating online solutions for clients across the Microsoft platforms and ecosystem. This included brainstorming ideas, researching new technologies and liaising with various vendors and internal teams to make relevant and creative solutions, which fitted the clients’ briefs and overall brand. I worked on briefs for a number of different global brands including BMW, Intel, P&G and Unilever. This included creating and maintaining client relationships, answering brief requests and attending industry events.As I worked in a global team, communication with other countries and regions was essential. I was responsible for representing our team in our monthly global calls, evangelizing our teams work, sharing best practices and learning from other teams globally. This was a key part of my role and often led to inspiration and co creation opportunities.

This role was more focused on meeting specific personal targets set by managers, which motivated me to succeed. These targets are consistently high, but I consistently met my targets and often exceeded them. The role again involved a more personal selling aspect. Clearly communicating various service plans, terms and conditions and financial breakdowns was essential in the role. Managing point of sale displays, marketing material and press releases which came from a variety of different sources gave me insight into consumer marketing with the telecoms industry. I benefited from seeing how these were structured, what was successful and how they could be improved, as well as consumer reaction to different campaigns.

My role within Marks and Spencer involved working with the public in order to satisfy their needs and concerns. This included listening to what customer wanted, recommending relevant products and assisting with any other enquires they had. This required clear communication with a variety of different people, and extensive product knowledge in order to ensure that their need where met. I was soon given further responsibilities, acting as shadows to the managers of the department and assisting with role allocation within teams and managing sections during busy periods. Cash collection and money handling also played a part in my role, ensuring tills were balanced and noting mistakes or errors within the cash draws. Working at one of the flagship stores also meant integrating within a large team. This allowed me to communicate with a variety of different managerial levels, and give feedback to senior managers and executives. Overall I feel the skills learnt within this organization acted as starting foundation which can be built on in future roles.
