When I visited my Grammar school "career planner", it was late in the picture of my final year. I'd just been offered a cadetship at one of the biggest Consulting firms in the world. I told her that I was good at accounting and finance, but my heart really sang for music. She advised me to go on to study accounting and finance, explaining that I would always be able to get a job as an accountant. She explained, I might even be able to work in the music industry, once I had more experience. At the time I thought her explanation sounded disappointingly cliché. Perhaps, I wondered, if she even believed in my ability to make it in music? Nevertheless, I heeded her words. I have enjoyed a wonderfully varied career out of her advice. In my first job a senior colleague of mine told me that in years down the road, we'd never be able to remember the actual work that we did, but only the people that we worked with. I still can't remember what we worked on that day, something to do with brokerage accounts. His words still ring true. After working late on the job that night, we enjoyed a nice pizza on the company credit card. Every job brings its own challenges and ambitions, but I'm always improving on keeping my focus on my team and our outcomes.
