Master Thesis title: "Reinforced nanocomposites for electrical insulation"At the Polymer and insulation department in the ABB research center, Baden, Switzerland.The goal of this project was to improve the thermal and mechanical properties of glass fibre reinforced epoxy resin without reducing the electrical insulation property by adding ceramic nanoparticles. The application of this research was hollow core composite insulators.The main challenges were first during the production to efficiently impregnate the glass fibres with the masterbatch (epoxy filled with nanoparticles) and then to characterise its properties and the electrical breakdown strength in a gas chamber.The reinforced nanocomposites were made using casting, RTM (Resin transfer molding), VARTM (Vacuum assisted transfer molding) and wet lay-up. The samples were observed using microscopy (SEM, OM) and the mechanical, dielectrical and thermal properties were measured.

At the “Wood and bionanocomposites department” in Lulea University in Lulea, Sweden.The goal of this project was to investigate the possibility of extracting cellulose nanofibres from common plants.The main challenge was first to isolate the cellulose nanofibres using accurate chemical and mechanical treatments. Many parameters and properties were then investigated such as the dispersion, the distribution in width (with OM, SEM, and AFM), the mechanical properties, the thermal properties and the ease of processing.

This project was carried out at the Research Laboratory of Johnson Control in Strasbourg (France) where seating solutions are developed for the automotive industry. My tasks were to investigate:- New formulations of bio-based PU foams for seating applications,- Aging of foams,- New mold coatings in order to reduce the use of release agent during production.
