Like most kids, my first experience with chemistry was the mixing of various compounds found in chemistry sets, much to the dismay of my parents once the unbearable stench of butyric acid filled the house. No wonder this reaction was discontinued in subsequent chemistry sets. I am certainly not the only one with the exact same outcome and in most cases, this would probably discourage most people instantly, for me however, it instilled in me an unquenchable thirst for knowledge.Even the years passing couldn´t deter me from my passion for chemistry. Much more, the sheer amount of possibilities even a single element of the periodic table offers still fascinates me to this day. I thoroughly enjoy reading of the newest achievements and witnessing the impact some compounds have on the very foundation chemistry is built upon. During my doctoral thesis, I dealt with one of mankind´s biggest standing issues: The capture of dinitrogen and subsequent conversion into nitrogen containing products with industrial as well as pharmaceutical relevancy. In cooperation with the industry, I currently work on implementing the established, small-scale reactions into industrial application. A topic that demands innovative thinking, time management, critical reflection and a huge amount of patience.To me, as a father, it is somewhat amusing how two distinctly different tasks, parenting and research, pose similar requirements. This in turn, provides me with a unique point of view in solving even complex problems. Not to mention my negotiation skills have been tested countless times to an extent I did not think possible.
