BEATBio is using gene therapy technology to reverse the underlying cause of heart failure, a weakened heart. BB-R12 activates myosin, the pumping protein in the heart, to strengthen contractions and speed relaxation.2) Aminex - COO. Aminex Therapeutics, Inc., is focused on development of a unique cancer immunotherapy. Aminex’s novel cancer immunotherapy drug, AMXT 1501/DFMO, engages the immune system to attack and clear cancer's primary tumors and metastases. AMXT 1501/DFMO negates two major immune system suppressors--polyamines and myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs). It reduces the cancer-driving roles of both the MYC and RAS oncogenes, thought to be involved with more than sixty percent of cancers. 3) Zeptovision - CEO. Zeptovision Inc. is a medical device company that uses the world’s smallest micro-camera system to develop a guidewire that can see (the EyeWire). EyeWire™ is a smart guidewire for use in a variety of medical procedures. EyeWire is a flexible, disposable and inexpensive system that allows direct visualization of confined and twisting pathways and deep structures that are currently inaccessible to visualization, eliminating the need for x-ray guidance and difficult manual guidance.

LaZure Scientific is a Medical Device company that has developed a Low Dose Alternating Current (LDAC) device for treating many types of cancer including prostate, liver, kidney, breast, colon and lung cancer. The first application being developed is a minimally invasive device for the treatment of early stage prostate cancer without the serious side effects related to current treatments. Prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men in the U.S. In extensive pre-clinical studies, the LaZure device has shown to be highly selective and effective in destroying cancer cells without harming key normal tissues, nerves and blood vessels which could significantly limit the serious side effects common with other treatments. LaZure’s device will have a strong impact on the estimated $8 billion prostate cancer treatment market.

FiatLux Imaging was a Healthcare IT company developing Scanosphere, a cloud-based SaaS solution for the sourcing, transport, analysis, storage and sharing of medical images. This service was designed to be integrated with medical imaging equipment by the use of over 800,000 physicians and 3 million healthcare workers in the U.S.The company was creating a SaaS service that would provide broader access to, and better use of, medical images by the specialists, general practioners, healthcare professionals and patients that need to review, analyze and share these images. The lack of systems outside of radiology centers and hospitals to effectively make use of medical images for treatment planning, patient education and peer collaborations costs the healthcare system hundreds of millions of dollars in repeat imaging, inefficient or unsuccessful surgeries and patient lawsuits. The market for new image management solutions is large and is based on the approxiamtely 115 million MRI/CT scans performed each year (U.S.) and the $500 billion received by physicians in the U.S. for patient treatment.

CG Therapeutics, Inc. (CGT) is a Biotechnology company that worked to commercialize a proprietary vaccine to treat cancer. A formulation of this new vaccine was shown to have safety and effectiveness in preliminary Phase I and Phase II human clinical trials including extending median survival of late stage cancer patients. The vaccine neutralizes hCG, a key regulatory hormone in the growth and spread of cancer cells. CGT acquired product formulations, clinical data and technology licenses resulting from a twenty year, $30 million investment by the World health Organization (WHO) and others. The company’s product addressed a $100+ billion market opportunity.

Confirma is a Medical Device company that developed CADstream™, a diagnostic device used with MRI imaging to better detect breast and prostate cancer. CADstream became the market leader in the MRI CAD field with sales of $6 million in 2004 growing to $25 million by 2008. The product was installed in over 1000 radiology practices and significantly improved the way in which MRI exams are processed and read by radiologists. Confirma was a venture capital-backed company with $35 million invested since it’s founding in 1998. The company was acquired by Merge Healthcare in 2009.

LifeSpex was a Medical Device company developing a new device for the detection of cervical cancer using proprietary biophotonic (light-based) technologies. The Company’s Cerviscan™ product for cervical cancer detection completed a landmark clinical study showing significantly increased detection rates for cervical cancer over the Pap test and colposcopy. The Company was funded with $22 million in venture capital and was acquired by a private equity group in 2002.

NexCura was a Healthcare IT company using web applications to help patients with cancer and other serious diseases choose the best treatment options and to match patients with ongoing clinical trials. These applications were based on extensive published, scientific databases and delivered personalized treatment information based on individual input from patients. These web applications and services are provided through eHealth portals and other healthcare websites including the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. The Company became a recognized leader in the delivery of interactive, personalized cancer treatment planning tools for patients, had 65 employees and an $8 million annual budget while I was CEO. The Company was acquired by Thomson Publishing in 2005.

Bard Diagnostic Sciences was a Medical Device company which was a wholly owned subsidiary of C. R. Bard (NYSE: BCR), a $1.3 billion medical products company. Before being acquired by Bard in 1993, the Company was Bainbridge Sciences, a private, angel funded medical company. The Company pioneered the development and commercialization of new diagnostic tests for cancer, including the BTA™ bladder cancer test, the first rapid cancer diagnostic test approved by the FDA . The Company had 66 employees and a $7 million annual budget while Max was CEO and introduced several products to market including the BTA test. As a co-founder and CEO, Max managed the sale of the company to C.R. Bard.

BioControl Systems was an early pioneer in developing and marketing new food testing devices and methods including the 1-2 Test for Salmonella and monoclonal antibody tests for E coli and Listeria. Many of these tests are still widely used, standardized tests in the food industry. The company also developed a biosensor device for healthcare diagnostics. The company raised significant corporate and VC equity capital prior to being acquired by a private investor group.
