I am examining the roles of reactive oxygen species and antioxidants in the bleaching mechanism in a variety of reef building and soft coral species. My research is based on self led and designed experiments with coral both in vitro in facilities on campus and in the field at Heron Island Marine Station on the Great Barrier Reef.

I contributed significantly as a design researcher for sustainable circular play design on a small team in the Play Lab. I worked to develop protocols, run a pilot study, and build/design an experimental tank system for a study examining how purple urchin dynamics will shift with future upwelling conditions in the Monterey Bay. I worked independently with another intern to develop protocols for measuring grazing rate, respiration rate, spine regrowth rate, gonad separation and drying, and more. I also worked closely with the marine station engineer and was heavily responsible for the design and building of a 12 tank system capable of individually controlling pH, temperature, and dissolved oxygen at the tank level with a central computer system (NSF Award 2108566). Data from our pilot study were analyzed in R Studio using a variety of modeling and statistical functions including linear mixed effects models to determine how each parameter individually affects urchin dynamics.

Technical Designer

I designed a custom high voltage power monitoring PCB using Autodesk Eagle and sourced parts. I then assembled the 93 component prototype board in-house(using a manufactured wafer). I troubleshot function for product verification and testing. I designed and assisted in installation of custom complex power control systems and control panels of World War II era lathes and mills. I assisted with product pipeline and marketing strategy, including designing and monitoring outreach campaigns.

Research Intern

I set up system infrastructure and developed protocols for new coral research program within the department. My research focuses included designing and running a LD50 range exposure to determine lethal levels of Florida red tide, Karenia brevis, and associated brevetoxins on a variety of stony corals (Acropora cervicornis and Montipora capricornis). I also investigated sublethal effects of red tide on stony corals during a pilot study. I assisted on a joint Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission study on sublethal effects of Florida red tide on hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria, and neurotoxic shellfish poisoning (NSP). I also aided in creating a two-current choice flume and ran exposures to investigate effects of Florida red tide on behavior of various marine species

I worked closely with a mentor within the exhibits department at the Exploratorium to conceive of, design, fabricate, and test new exhibits for the Exploratorium Science Museum from scratch. The Exploratorium is an interdisciplinary museum combining science, technology, and arts in interactive experiences and exhibits.On a day-to-day basis, I worked in the machine shop, at a desk, or on the floor observing guest interaction with the exhibits. One of my exhibits, is currently on the show floor for testing.

I worked on a team at the MIT Edgerton Center to design equipment and teaching tools for engaging physics demonstrations. Each year, MIT Students work with MISTI Global Teaching Labs to teach students across the world, spreading MIT's philosophy of "Mens et Manus," meaning "Mind and Hand" teaching. The equipment and curriculum was designed to be highly transportable, to be taken with MIT students to any corner of the world. I specifically focused on Optics labs, designing equipment that could be used in place of expensive lenses and lab equipment in the field. I was involved with research for a wide variety of materials and fabrication methods.

Exhibits Design Intern

I worked with the exhibits team to update and maintain exhibits on display inside the museum. I helped brainstorm and design exhibits for a winter pop-up installation. The majority of my time was spent working with the zoology team to improve animal habitats and enclosures. I created a set of highly customizable habitat enrichment shelters that were fun and engaging for both animals and guests.
