In this role I conduct R&D research for in-ear devices ("hearables"). I am responsible for guiding projects from conception to execution, and coordinating the efforts of a small team of engineers. Over the course of any given project, I'll conduct a deep dive into the literature (one of the true pleasures of R&D), do quite a bit of coding in Matlab/Python/C++ (another pleasure), and perform hands-on experimentation and statistical analysis. The work requires a good amount of analytical problem-solving, and the ability to communicate effectively across disciplines. Projects culminate in a technical report, which, given the challenge of presenting and communicating complex ideas, is surprisingly rewarding to put together.

Research and development, bringing experimental/theoretical ideas to life through code in Matlab and C++. I particularly enjoy the challenge of teaching complex ideas through live demonstrations and presentations, and through technical writing. On the job I'm always learning (which is a total thrill), either through individual pursuits, or through stimulating collaboration my colleagues.

Assisting on audio immersion for musical telepresence. Editing papers and theses (with my infamously heavy-handed comments: "Maxwell's silver hammer").

Was fortunate enough to receive a "best TA award" this semester.

Contributed signal processing and statistical analysis that resulted in "Semantic dimensions of sound mass music: Mappings between perceptual and acoustic domains" (Noble, 2020).

SUUNS is an internationally acclaimed rock band that has toured worldwide, performing over 500 shows in 41 countries over 6 continents, including a sold-out show at the Elysée Montmartre in Paris in 2018 (capacity 1,380). They have appeared in local and international press including The Wall Street Journal, The New Yorker, The New York Times, and Les Inrocks (FR). SUUNS’ music has featured in prominent television programming including 13 Reasons Why (Netflix 2017) and the Nike Flyknit commercial featuring Kobe Bryant (2014).

My work for the CBC Documentary "The Secret World of Gold" was recognized with a SOCAN Young Composers Award Original Score: Documentary (2015). Recorded and assisted on over 50 projects. Here I learned about teamwork dynamics (every band has their own dynamic); I also learned a great deal about common pitfalls that can derail the creative process. I had occasion to play on a few albums coming through, notably a tiny bit of piano on Patrick Watson's Wooden Arms (2009), which went platinum in Canada.
