I am a trainer and coach specialising in conflict, communication and leadership. I teach people how to work with healthy conflict - to use confusion and disagreement as an opportunity for greater understanding and connection.I have been an independent advisor to the cabinet office, I set up an alternative business school in a derelict betting shop, I've run a world-renowned democratic company and worked across Europe and Scandinavia with private multinational organisations and world-changing NGOs.My driver is to support the people who know things can be different - who want to turn the tide on the issues they know need tackling. I do this by equipping them with the spaces and skills that will let them live and work in the most creative way possible, towards a world where everybody's needs matter.Organisations I've worked with include: WWF UK, The Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Coca Cola, The Cabinet Office, The RSPCA, The Department of Health, Virgin Media, Channel 4 Television, The BBC, The Climate Coalition. I've taught at the Said Business School in Oxford, as well as the Kaos Pilots (Bern) and Knowmads (Amsterdam) alternative business schools.I am also a blacksmith and bladesmith (member of the Blacksmiths Guild and British Artist Blacksmiths Association), qualified Forest School practitioner and I teach Daoist martial arts and Qi Gong.

Facilitator And Leadership TrainerSelf-Employed Mar 2020 - PresentUk And EuropeI work with individuals and organisations to develop the skills and conditions for participative leadership - how to work together to address the issues that matter, for change that sticks.I've been doing this for nearly a decade, in various roles, working with organisations that include private multinational organisations to public sector housing services and small community organisations.I work both inside organisations, partnering with stakeholders and changemakers, and as a trainer on residential retreats and programmes, which I've taught across the UK, Europe and Scandinavia."When Max is in the room, you know things are going to get done. He makes the most difficult things feel easy."- Head of Housing, Public Sector Organisation"Max has the ability to glide like a knife to the centre of a problem and present plainly, clearly and compassionately what's going on. He has a deep understanding of the human heart in a way that is entirely free of bullshit."- Chief Exec, Voluntary Organisation

Conflict Trainer And CoachHow To Fight Well Mar 2019 - PresentUk And EuropeI teach people how to work with healthy conflict - recognising that conflict is inevitable but with the right tools and mindset it can strengthen our relationships and deepen our understanding. I developed 'How to Fight Well' as a framework for doing this - a systematic and strategic approach to changing how we show up to conflict. I initially trained in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) and taught it to others. After experiencing a lot of conflict aversion and exclusionary attitudes in that field, I decided to develop my own practice, integrating some of its core principles with elements of neurophysiology and mindfulness practice. I've taught the practice to leaders, teachers and parents, coaching individuals and training large groups across the private, public and community sectors. My online courses have been licensed to multinational NGOs and digital agencies across Europe, Scandinavia and the UK."I now have courage - belief that there is no need to avoid conflict, only approach it in the right way. Like if you walk behind a horse it will kick you, but if you approach with care and consideration you can ride off into the sunset."- Chief Executive, Nonprofit Organisationwww.howtofightwell.com

FounderWild Things (Uk) Aug 2015 - Mar 2020Brighton, United KingdomI created Wild Things as a response to the need I saw for alternative business education and training.I set up a business school in an old betting shop in Brighton, UK, running a training programme and series of events. I went on to instigate a series of projects, many in collaboration with organisations and the local community. The focus was always on teaching people how to work in uncertainty and recognise the need for adaptive, collaborative and humane ways of getting good things done. The project was inspired by the Kaos Pilots and Knowmads business schools in Scandinavia and Europe, where I had been teaching. The first of its kind in the UK, I was the project director and lead trainer/consultant, working with an ever-changing roster of collaborators from a wide-range of disciplines.I wound the project down in March 2020 when I realised that my ambition for it had been achieved and I wanted to focus full time on my conflict, leadership and facilitation work.
