I have a passion for bridging the gap between research and real-world applications. Additionally, I see a need for positively impacting the world through disrupting innovation to solve current societal and climate issues. Therefore, I want to use my skills to help turning startup ideas into successful businesses that can make a positive impact.--I chose an education in biotechnology based on my interest in the natural sciences and a curiosity about how living organisms work. Did a bachelor and master in Life Science & Technology, focusing on synthetic biology and genetic engineering, with the iGEM competition and internship at Biosyntia as highlights. Greatly enjoyed the opportunity at iGEM to pursue our own project and build something from the ground up. At Biosyntia I got the chance to have great (science) discussions with a highly skilled team, got freedom and responsibility, and opportunity to explore the BD world.Pursued a PhD on tool development to improve bacteria that deliver therapeutics inside the human body, as this topic highly interested me and several spinouts had come from this research group. Worked on improving localisation and local delivery of therapies, a CRISPR-based biocontainment method and learned python + developed a genome scale metabolic model when stuck at home with the COVID lockdown.Based on an interest in the startup ecosystem and commercialisation of research did a minor in Science Based Business during the bachelor, got involved in various events, volunteer groups and ended up helping ambitious LS/biotech startups develop their business strategy with Nordic BioVentures, by building and running incubation programs, plus starting our own sustainable startups.Next to all other activities I have been involved in a range of projects and committees, and enjoy working together on diverse projects, both related to biotechnology and with a broader scope. Always great to bring people together, meet inspiring people and together work on building a successful event or project.

Phd Candidate - Bacterial Synthetic BiologyThe Novo Nordisk Foundation Center For Biosustainability Sep 2018 - May 2022Copenhagen, Capital Region, DenmarkMy PhD thesis focused on tool development for the use of engineered bacteria as therapeutics inside the human body. To advance the development of this area, I worked on three parts:- Developed a genome-scale metabolic model to enhance understanding of cell metabolism and prediction of engineering targets- Targeted binding of mammalian cells by therapeutic bacteria for enhanced and localised therapeutic delivery- Development of CRISPR-based biocontainment strategy with limited selective pressure -
Tutor/Exam TrainerLyceo Feb 2018 - Aug 2018Tutor and exam trainer of secondary school students in chemistry and biology. During these exam trainings I give presentations on the theory, help students with assignments and questions, and keep them motivated. One of the aspects of this work that I enjoy is that I'm helping students to develop and understand subjects, especially when students beforehand thought they would never understand it.In this work I improved my skills in, among others, presenting, explaining concepts in an understandable manner, motivating and working with adolescents. -
Research AssistantBiosyntia Sep 2016 - Aug 2017Copenhagen, Capital Region, DenmarkStarted at Biosyntia, a biotech start-up, as intern in the research department and was hired as research assistant after this internship was finished. One of their main activities is in vitamin production by bacteria.During my employment at Biosyntia I worked on, among others:- Optimised a genome editing technique (MAGE) and developed and tested new features for better compatibility with Biosyntia’s experimental setup- Identified and assessed genomic targets for production optimisation- Performed bioassays to test production performance strains- Worked on several projects involving whole genome sequencing- Aided in business model construction and market analysis- Independently supervised two interns -
Master ThesisTechnische Universiteit Delft Oct 2015 - Jun 2016Industrial Microbiology & Environmental BiotechnologyResearch on the effect of selective conditions on mixed culture fermentations. Chose this topic based on his interest in the use of microbial communities in the production of compounds, like biofuels. Gained experience on mixed culture fermentations, doing (individual) research, problem solving, data interpretation and scientific verbal/written communication. -
Science Manager Of The Grand Prize Winner Igem TeamTu Delft Feb 2015 - Oct 2015Tu Delft Igem Team 2015International Genetically Engineered Machine competition (iGEM) is an international competition in the field of synthetic biology. The aim of the project was to develop a 3D printer that can print biofilms. As Science Manager I worked on, amongst others:- Formulation of the project and scientific implementation- Design of the constructs (biobricks)- Wetlab planning and work- Spinning disk microscopy- Design of promotional materials- Presenting during a synthetic biology event organized by RIVM and the Rathenau Institute- Presentation of our project at the Giant Jamboree in Boston This team was awarded several prizes during the Giant Jamboree and became Grand Prize Winner in the overgraduate division. We received the following prizes:- Grand Prize Winner, Overgrad- Best Hardware Project- Best Applied Design- Best Wiki (website)- Nominated for the best New Composite Part, Overgrad- Nominated for the best Part Collection, Overgrad- Nominated for the best Integrated Human Practices, Overgrad- Nominated for the best Model, OvergradAdditionally we have been awarded the UfD-IHC Teamwork Award 2016 for TU Delft-based team achievements with an innovative and unique performance. -
