UCLA Track & Field and Cross Country Student-AthleteI was a competitive runner starting in middle school and chose to continue my athletic career at UCLA because of high standards in both athletics and academics. As a UCLA student-athlete I had to balance a full load of coursework in a STEM field with the daily requirements of a full-time athlete. I chose UCLA precisely for this challenge, and because I wanted to contribute to the athletic and academic legacy at that university. While at UCLA I was a leader among my peers, encouraging my teammates to challenge themselves both in the classroom and in our sport. I cultivated great time management and work prioritization skills, and how to respond to high expectations. Working with a team to meet our short and long term goals brought a special kind of camaraderie that I will carry through the rest of my life. Running gave me the opportunity to learn the sport from great coaches, build lifelong friendships, and get a great education.

Kollective Technologies provides streaming web services for corporate events using both web-based and mobile applications. I worked on web-app test automation using Selenium on several different operating systems and browsers. When I arrived, Windows tests on all browsers worked well and it was my job to stand up a Mac test suite. The Chrome tests adapted with little effort, but the Selenium Safari library had significant bugs. For example, window maximization did not work but was required to complete some of the tests. I found that this bug was introduced only in the latest version of Selenium, so I explored the possibility of using an older version of this testing harness. But the older version of Selenium did not support alert popup handling, which was also needed by many tests. I could either maximize browser windows or handle alert popups. I weighed the options and recommended to my boss that we maintain maximum test coverage by using the latest version of Selenium. I completed the Mac test suite 2 weeks ahead of schedule, allowing me to begin work on a mobile device test suite.

The UCLA Rocket Project builds a rocket for a yearly colligate competition. While most teams enter a single use, solid fuel rocket, we wanted to build a reusable liquid fueled engine. This poses challenges beyond construction, particularly in engine force output and timing. I was in the structural testing group, which was responsible for creating a frame that would secure the engine for testing and recording data. We did a mix of problem solving on test frame construction, engine safety and security, and deconstruction/reconstruction on site, among other basic manufacturing tasks. At the end of the project, we had one of the first successful launches and recoveries in a number of years for our club. I learned to be creative in problem solving techniques, teamwork, deadline completion, and role flexibility.
