Public Health Researcher - Mph Capstone Project

Medical College Of Wisconsin & Washington Ozaukee Health Department

Washington & Ozaukee County (Wi)

AbstractMental health is a prioritized issue in the United States (U.S.). A portion of the U.S. adult and child population are impacted by mental illness. Despite being a priority, research shows that many adults and children with mental illness do not receive treatment. The purpose of this paper is to calculate and understand the mental health treatment gap in Washington and Ozaukee Counties in Wisconsin. This paper calculates and identifies themes associated with the mental health treatment gap using mixed methods. A difference was calculated between the any mental illness (AMI) prevalence in both adult and child populations and the unique patient count (received from the Wisconsin Health Information Organization – WHIO) for adults and children who accessed mental health services, which produced an estimate of the mental health treatment gap in both Washington and Ozaukee Counties. Additionally, health and human service professionals were interviewed to provide insight into themes that act as associated factors to the treatment gap. Open coding of the interview notes and recorded conversations highlighted reoccurring themes to help understand the mental health treatment gap in both counties. The mental health treatment gap for children and adults in Washington and Ozaukee were higher than state averages. Lack of providers, long wait times, lack of education, and financial/insurance factors were major themes addressed by interviewees. Further efforts to increase providers, treatment options, educational efforts for adults and youth, and improving transportation systems may help improve the mental health condition and reduce the treatment gap in both counties.Inbox for more information about the project.

Campaign Director

Ripon Rally Health And Wellness Campaign

Ripon, Wi

This campaign is a project that is part of my "Public Sociology and Activism" class. The goal of this class is to teach the basic concepts of public sociology and activism, and to also create a public activism campaign. As a class, we have chosen the topic of health and wellness, and how nutrition and physical education are important factors of health and wellness. We chose the 5th grade population at Murray Park Elementary and Quest Charter Elementary in Ripon, Wisconsin. My roles are tactical planner, recruiter, and public speaker. Part of my role as tactical planner included creating five distinct lesson plans for the classroom that educate and teach students valuable skills on what safe and healthy nutrition and physical activity are, and how to practice those safe and healthy habits. As a recruiter I have reached out to student groups and athletic teams in the Ripon College community to aid in our efforts. As a public speaker, I deliver information in classroom educational settings, and in public forums with parents, Ripon community members, and Ripon College community members. In this campaign we are also holding a health and wellness fair called "The Ripon Rally" which is a field day with various physical activity stations set up by Ripon College student groups and athletic teams. I am part of helping to develop and implement strategies and event details as tactical planner. We are also using this campaign as an opportunity to do research by gathering data to assess what children know before, and after our campaign to measure how effective our campaign was on the education aspect of our campaign. I will be a part of collecting, analyzing, and making conclusions on this data.
