The school plans several overnight wilderness trips each year. As an outdoor educator, my role during these trips is to co-lead a group of 10 students into the wilderness for experiential learning. My responsibilities include:• Implementing and enforcing safety and risk management guidelines.• Building rapport with students through games and activities.• Managing travel with maps, a compass, GPS, and other navigation tools.• Conducting inventories and gear checks.• Teaching and modeling leave-no-trace ethics and other wilderness practices.• Empowering students to become peer leaders by assigning daily roles and responsibilities.• Resolving conflict and mentoring students on an individual, as-needed basis.• Facilitating group discussions, reflections, activities, and school-related curriculum. With Explorer West, I have the opportunity to practice leadership and interpersonal skills in a dynamic environment. Each trip these kids go out and learn so much about themselves, each other, and their place in the world. I enjoy facilitating that sense of growth and discovery that they explore, planting the seed of wilderness education and appreciation in their hearts and minds. I find my experience with Explorer West personally rewarding as it also serves to remind me of what it's like to witness the wilderness for the first time. -
Skills TrainerTrillium Family Services Oct 2013 - Jun 2014Portland, Oregon, UsTrillium Family Services provides acute psychiatric care ranging from day-treatment to long-term case management and treatment planning. I worked on the long-term unit with highly reactive adolescents who experienced symptoms that included depression, anxiety, suicidal ideation, and psychosis. My role was to support their day-to-day activity and treatment while maintaining safe boundaries and staff-to-client ratios. My responsibilities included:• Plan activities and schedules for the day, documenting clients’ locations at all times.• Review pertinent medical and psychological records, along with logged alerts or notices from the treatment staff.• Facilitate daily goal-setting discussion groups.• Respond to acute crisis with non-violent intervention and emotional validation.• Build rapport through shared activities that would help encourage clients to better manage their symptoms through coping techniques.• Model healthy and open communication, personal boundaries, and positive coping skills.• Coach clients on behavioral modification using established and accepted psychological models including ART, CPS, DBT, and more.Working at Trillium instilled a greater sense of compassion and empathy after witnessing first-hand the challenges certain individuals face in our current treatment systems. I learned the importance of individuals being engaged in their own treatment and how our culture tends to handle mental health, often ignoring the prescription of proper nutrition and regular exercise. This position provided personal growth as both mentor and role model, and taught me more effective communication skills and how to set professional boundaries. -
Crew LeaderNorthwest Youth Corps Jun 2013 - Oct 2013Eugene, Oregon, UsNorthwest Youth Corps is a non-profit job training, experiential education, and leadership development program based in Oregon's beautiful Willamette Valley. Outdoor Oregon is a seasonal, grant-funded program that offers youth 10 weeks of outdoor job training without requiring back-country living. Students live at home and meet at a central location in their communities on a regular business schedule. The crew then drives to various project sites and completes projects under the guidance of the crew leader (AmeriCorps position) and the community partners. Students are compensated with high school credit and a stipend. My role as a crew leader meant that I: • Supervised a crew of ten teens in the completion of service-learning projects.• Taught daily educational lessons on a variety of topics (i.e. forest management).• Partnered with community organizations to manage projects.• Prioritized and delegated tasks based on project needs and crew abilities.• Completed 2-week back-country Leadership Development Training.Being a crew leader demanded that I refine my leadership and communication to be as authentic as possible. Balancing the needs of the project with the needs of the individual crew members meant that I had to assess the needs of the team, re-evaluate goals and objectives, and make compromises. Working in the outdoors requires additional planning, logistical analysis, and risk management. Safety was a huge priority that I always role-modeled and incorporated into every decision. Ultimately, our summer crews had high success rates and positive program experiences, resulting in over a dozen completed projects and future partnership opportunities for Northwest Youth Corps.
