About Max Yao
Hi friends! I am a second-year graduate student at UCLA's Luskin School of Public Affairs, pursuing my master's degree in Social Welfare (MSW). I am a diligent and ambitious individual who is currently working as a College Academic Mentor for UCLA's Center for Academic Advising in the College and interning as a Social Work Intern for LA County Office of Education.I have substantial diverse experience in mentoring children and adolescents with special needs, managing student employees, executing independent psychological research, providing crisis support, advocating for accessible and culturally sensitive mental health care, and supporting high-risk adult clients at an outpatient clinic. With my higher degree and extensive background, I intend on obtaining licensure to become a LCSW and eventually providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive therapy for adults with severe mental health disorders, particularly those who come from low-income and underserved communities, in a non-profit setting. As a member of the Asian American, LGBTQIA+, low-income, and first-generation communities, I especially hope to utilize my personal experiences and perspectives to better serve these populations in a way that emphasizes cultural humility, intersectionality, and solidarity. My overarching goal is to create and nurture safe, healing, and empowering spaces for individuals who have been have been historically (and continue to be) excluded, marginalized, and discriminated against by the current systems in place. No matter what someone's background is or what one's upbringing might entail, everyone deserves to be heard, accepted, supported, and fought for. I hope that I can be that source of light for those left in the dark. Outside of work and school, you can catch me DJing, shooting film photography, going to shows, creating art, watching anime, camping, skateboarding, cooking new recipes, thrifting, and collecting cute, vintage toys!Let's connect! :)
