I have been working and living as a teacher in China since 2019. What makes China different, is the extent of your responsibilities. The role, duties and responsibilities as written in the contract, versus what some teachers actually do, varies greatly. I am not complaining about this as I am an extremely dedicated teacher and worker. What I mean by this, is that it is something any potential interviewer would rather have to discuss with the interviewee as there are so many things to discuss. An example of this would be that the contract states homeroom teacher, but you end up being the curriculum coordinator for the grade level, which in fact, happened in my case. I believe in a hands-on approach, thinking outside the box, being very much involved and always trying to get students to get outside their comfort zones (which mostly results in independent thinking and personal growth). Before coming to China, I tutored many children and young adults in multiple subjects. I studied a 4 year BCom degree in Strategic Management and Quantitative techniques in the workplace. I realized early on that I should rather have chosen a degree in Education, but, when you start something, you finish it. Today, I’m convinced that the degree has actually helped me in many areas, especially when it comes to evaluating students and risks. After all, we are different and unique and a teacher should know how to plan het lessons accordingly.I completed a 360 hour TEFL diploma in order to teach abroad. This has enabled me to teach, which is my passion. I have taught students from ages 2- 16, not only English, but many different subjects. I have also tutored adults in Business English.
