As a new graduate from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in Physical Geography, I am excited to begin pursuing a career that grows my spatial data science and remote sensing skills. As an undergraduate I completed coursework and research using Landsat 2 data, R, and QGIS. These experiences showed me the potential of what spatial technology can do, and I can't wait to dive in deeper. My main focus as a geographer and remote sensing scientist is not only bridging the gap between theory, application, and data, but bridging the gap between data and user. My goal is to make the patterns and data I see understandable for the audience it's intended for.After graduating from undergraduate study, I began a fellowship with a local high school engineering academy, where I developed my skills as a problem solver, communicator, and collaborator. As a fellow spearheading the programs budding elementary school outreach STEAM program, I was able to use my knowledge in physical geography and physical science to create their 6th grade Arduino Weather Station project. By combining Arduino and science lessons on weather, I was able to create a 16 week 6th-grade level course that exposed students to the basics of Arduino coding and local and global weather patterns. This kit was custom engineered, innovated, trained and distributed across 9 elementary schools in Santa Barbara, CA along with their other STEAM lessons. Through my experience as an educator to both teachers and elementary school students, I grew as a communicator, team player, and problem solver. Those teacher and teaching moments proved to me the power of optimism, perseverance, and attitude on any team, adult or child. After my year in the fellowship, I then decided to pursue my personal goal of traveling more and gaining a mastery of Chinese Mandarin. After spending 9 months abroad in Taiwan, immersing myself in the culture and language, and studying on scholarship at Taipei's best Mandarin Language Center, I hope to return to work and research in remote sensing and spatial data science.While I have begun with the basics of learning Python and continuing to grow my R coding skills, the knowledge that there is much more out there to learn and discover on this front continues to keep me motivated and inspired.
