My fellowship was divided into a health sciences research portion (part I) and a clinical research portion in the SCI rehabilitation setting (part II). • Part I: For the first project I looked at Medicare Part D dual enrollment in Veterans with SCI/D. My project aims were to examine the characteristics of dual Medicare Part D and VA use among Veterans with SCI, and assess the impact that Medicare Part D and VA dual enrollment had on VA utilization in Veterans with SCI. This work involved a collaboration with health economists at the Hines VA. • Part II: For the second project of my fellowship I laid the groundwork for the development of a new outcome tool for assessing balance and posture in Veterans with SCI/D. This involved collaboration with physicians and researchers at UC Irvine, Mount Sinai, and the Bronx VA.

I assisted the centers staff and faculty on various rehabilitation and applied research projects. Projects included:• The development of an adaptive sports registry for SCI/D veterans• The use of DermaTherapy linens for pressure ulcer management in SCI veterans• The relationship between touchless catheter use and urinary tract infections in SCI veterans• Setting up and running a pilot trial investigating whether an in-elastic lumbar brace (Aspen Summit 637) is able to decrease opioid medication use and pain in chronic LBP veterans.• Organizing and participating in Lifestyle Redesign (pressure ulcer management) team meetings with UCI and USC collaborators.I also assisted in various grants related to new and existing projects for the SCI team.

In addition to maintaining the responsibilities from the previous position (Assistant Specialist-see below), I also took on a few more responsibilities/projects and served as:• Committee member for developing UCI Comprehensive Spine Center• Special Projects Manager for Office of Research at UCI School of Medicine (SOM) Special projects included working with UCI's Biology Departments Dean of Research to develop and maintain a web-based application (called InterestApp) that identifies and matches UCI School of Medicine colleagues who have similar funding/research interests. I also participated in other activities, such as creating an online searchable research equipment list for UCI faculty and other "research on research" tasks.• RIRC medical writing mentor for UCI residents in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Department

During this year I served as:• Editor and writer for RIRC “Spinal Connections” community newsletter.• Public education coordinator (this included giving tours and organizing the company demos and displays at our our annual "Meet the Scientist" event, as well as other events with organizations like Unite to Fight Paralysis).• Medical education coordinator (where I wrote and organized CME events related to SCI). • Coordinator for SCI clinical and basic science research symposiums/special speaker series• Roman Reed Grant award manager (this included participation in grants review, grant money management and analyses for legislative reports).I also continued to participate in stem cell transplantation studies in animal models of SCI.

I obtained this job directly out of college due to my previous undergraduate research experience and knowledge. As a Junior Research Scientist I worked closely with the companies Senior Scientist to validate and improve the use of the company's cytokine (IP-10) antibody for testing in various inflammatory diseases. My responsibilities included:• Running in vitro experiments (such as antibody culturing and cloning, chemotaxis assays, cell proliferation assays, RT-PCR, and RPAs) related to our antibody.• Developing and running in vivo inflammatory disease models (such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Multiple Sclerosis (EAE), and Spinal Cord Injury) to test the antibody's treatment effects. • Ordering and financial management of all research related supplies and materials.At this company I was able to work closely with the company's CSO and CEO throughout all of my work.Note: The IP-10 antibody treatment and company was sold to Amgen in 2004.
