Hernando Lab — NYU Langone Department of PathologyThe Hernando Lab works to identify novel mechanisms of melanoma metastasis to the brain by chiefly using in vivo models. My work in the lab revolved around finding transcriptomic markers and genes required for melanoma brain metastases. I routinely conducted various cell culture techniques such as cell proliferation assays and MaxiPreps, and general molecular biology techniques such as single cell RNASeq, qPCR, and western blotting. I performed laser-capture micro-dissection and IVIS experiments using ABSL-2 in vivo model mice and collected data from short-term cultures from melanoma patients. My most recent work was a systematic review of the literature around traumatic brain injuries in transgender populations that was featured at the International Brain Injury Association 2021 World Congress and published in the Brain Injury journal. Working as a researcher in Polygeia, my project was centered around the implementation of effective primary care interventions via mHealth apps in nine different countries. This work was presented at the Polygeia International 2020 conference, published in the Polygeia Global Health and Policy Journal, and was featured on NYU’s I am GPH podcast.

America Reads*America Counts is a program funded by Federal Work Study that partners with local public elementary and middle schools to improve young students' achievement in mathematics and reading.
