Maya Young Email and Phone Number
I am currently pursuing a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Utah. My diverse experiences have equipped me with a blend of technical expertise, leadership, and interpersonal skills.Engineering and Research Experience:Currently, I conduct research under Professor Ashutosh Tiwari at the Nanomaterials Research Lab, the University of Utah. My work involves nanoscale characterization and analysis of materials, including projects on titanium nitride (TiN) thin films on mica and enhancing copper wire conductivity with graphene. I have developed skills in conductivity testing, atomic force microscopy (AFM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). I am also actively engaged in writing my first research paper, with Dr. Tiwari and our team.As an R&D intern at HiFunda, I worked on enhancing concrete materials and production. This role involved extensive materials characterization and data analysis, utilizing techniques like compressive strength testing and microstructural analysis. In the Materials Characterization Lab at the University of Utah, I learned the theory behind various characterization machines and received hands-on training from lab manager Kim Watts. I later ran client samples independently, producing clear data and communicating effectively with clients.Leadership and Teamwork:As a shift lead at Alpha Coffee, I developed valuable communication, leadership, and teamwork skills. I managed shifts, ensured customer satisfaction, and maintained a welcoming environment, enhancing my problem-solving and multitasking abilities.Core Values and Skills:I believe in thoroughness and precision. My engineering journey has instilled in me a commitment to excellence, continuous learning, and collaboration.Core Skills:Advanced materials characterization techniquesData analysis and reportingProject management and executionLeadership and team collaborationEffective communication and client interactionProblem-solving and adaptabilityI am excited to continue my engineering journey, leveraging my skills to contribute to innovative solutions in the field.

Research And Development InternHifunda Llc Nov 2023 - May 2024Salt Lake City Metropolitan AreaAssisted senior engineers in research projects aimed at enhancing the production and materials of concrete.Conducted extensive materials characterization to analyze and improve concrete properties, utilizing techniques such as:Compressive Strength TestingMicrostructural Analysis (e.g., SEM)X-ray Fluorescence (XRF)Analyzed data and prepared detailed reports to support research findings and recommendations.Participated in project meetings to learn effective presentation skills, report creation, and the conduct of professional research discussions.Contributed to the maintenance of a safe and clean working environment by assisting with weekly lab clean-ups and office upkeep.Collaborated with engineers to troubleshoot and optimize experimental procedures, ensuring the accuracy and reliability of results.Gained hands-on experience in project management, including planning, execution, and documentation of research activities. -
Laboratory InternMaterials Characterization Lab May 2023 - Dec 2023Salt Lake City, Utah, United StatesAcquired a thorough understanding of the theory behind various technologies and machines used in the lab through in-depth learning and one-on-one training with lab manager Kim Watts.Conducted desired tests on client samples using advanced characterization equipment, including SEM, XRD, SEM, Rheology/DMA , UV-Vis-NIR, Micromeritics 3Flex, PSA, Pycnometry, Karl Fisher Titration, DSC, TGA, Instron Mechanical Testing, FT-IR, and sample preparation techniques .Analyzed data and presented it in a readable and comprehensible format to meet client needs and facilitate their research and development projects.Problem-solved any issues that arose during testing and analysis, maintaining high standards of accuracy and reliability.Engaged with clients to understand their requirements and provide tailored solutions, enhancing customer satisfaction.Conducted self-driven projects during free time. To do so we were presented with a problem and a sample, it was then left to us to decide what characterization process and research needed to be done to solve the problem. This included identifying the geographical origin of a natural rock sample by using SEM/EDAX to identify the minerals and then conducting research to determine its origin. I also analyzed various paint samples to identify the color combination in each using UV-VIS-NIR and the color spectrum.Participated in routine lab maintenance and calibration of equipment, contributing to a safe and efficient working environment. -
