Hi everyone! I’m Maya Patel and I’m currently studying at the University of Arizona, pursuing a bachelors in Nutritional Sciences with a dietetics emphasis and a minor in sports nutrition. After I changed my major from nursing at the beginning of my sophomore year of college, I began interning for a Phoenix-based Dietitian who offers counseling to clients wanting to begin a vegan diet. My responsibilities as an intern consisted of creating educational content for social media and educational protocols for client use, usually pertaining to a wide variety of topics such as navigating bariatric surgery, diabetes, adequate protein intake, eating disorders, and several other topics. The summer of my senior year, I got a job at Tucson Medical Center in the food service department. My responsibilities consisted of taking patient meal orders in the call center in accordance with the diet recommended by their dietitian. This taught me a lot about how diet plays a role in patient recovery and disease prevention. As I continue my journey through the dietetic program, I am also navigating different areas of the field. For example, I am apart of a brewing internship in which we are taught the brewing process, history, and nutritional benefits of beer. I have also volunteered for over 40 hours at the Campus Pantry, a non-profit organization at the University that provides food to the local community, staff, and students. I also have had the opportunity to act as a mock dietitian to elderly patients at Tucson Medical Center, teach basic nutrition and cooking to elementary students, and educate foster parents and children on basic nutrition and how to build a balanced, easy meal.
