I am a graduating senior at Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia majoring in Health Sciences with an interest in public health and sports medicine. My tenure as a scholar at Spelman College has uniquely prepared me to serve the community and promote public health. I have gained experience in public health research and community outreach that has prepared me for a future career in public health. In 2022, I participated in the ASPHN Health Equity Internship where I was placed in Morehouse School of Medicine’s (MSM) Office of Community Engagement (OCE). During this time, I assisted the OCE team with community outreach by attending community health events and providing health information to the public. I also gained experience in nurturing community partnerships by contacting local organizations interested in collaborations with MSM. Most importantly, I gained research experience by developing the inaugural evaluation for the office’s annual Community Engagement Day using a quantitative survey. This contribution was invaluable, as no evaluation exited for the event in its 10-year history. The OCE leadership team is now able to make technological and logistical changes to ensure a better experience for patrons in the historic West End Atlanta area in forthcoming years.I was also a member of Valued Voices INC. where I was able to spread the importance of healthy habits to elementary students in the West End area of Atlanta. I am also a current student member of the National Association of Black Physical Therapists AUC chapter and had the opportunity to shadow at a physical therapy office for months to gain skills in patient care and communication.I am a highly capable and intelligent scholar looking forward to advancing my knowledge of health promotion and disease prevention as I enter the heath care field!
