About Mayela A. Salazar García

I am an architect passionate about sustainability, optimizing the use of natural resources, and regenerating spaces and ecosystems at both the building and city scales.Since 2013, I have actively participated as a technical leader in milestone projects, including the design phases of the first Net Zero Energy building in Latin America and over 50 projects across various typologies for the implementation of international sustainability certifications.I hold a master’s degree in Advanced Sustainable Design from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, where I explored my interest in human behavior patterns and their relationship with domestic energy consumption, earning the ESALA Award for Advanced Sustainable Design in 2018.In 2019, I founded GreenMinds, a sustainability and energy efficiency consultancy focused on mixed-use and residential developments. My professional experience in the private sector and through personal entrepreneurship has highlighted the significant impact we can have on the design of our cities and public spaces, fostering the creation of equitable and just environments. From 2022 to September 2024, I had the privilege of serving as a public servant for the capital city of Nuevo León, Monterrey, which has a population of nearly 1.2 million inhabitants. In my role as General Director for Green Development, I lead a talented team of 40 professionals in directing the city's environmental strategy, including mitigation and adaptation to climate change—the first of its kind within the municipality's organizational structure. My work focused on generating public policy and creating strategic projects and programs aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This involvement deepened my understanding of the importance of intersectoral collaboration as key to co-creating our city, as well as the pressing need for democratic and responsible citizenship in governance.Since 2022, I have also been a professor at Tec de Monterrey in the School of Architecture, where I aspire to contribute to the application of sustainability at an individual scale. I firmly believe that our personal decisions shape our lives and promote a purpose-driven existence.I am grateful to be part of an incredible group of friends, family, and mentors who accompany me on this journey and encourage my growth. I love knowing, now more than ever, that we are shaped by how we react to what happens to us.Cheers!
