About Mayra Donaji Barrera Machuca
I’m an assistant professor from the Faculty of Computer Science at Dalhousie University. My research is on HCI, where I work on VR/AR user interface design. I focus on gaining a better understanding of how people think when working inside a 3D virtual environment. My current projects involve sketching in VR, using VR to train people, studying how people think spatially inside virtual environments, and studying the problems of stereo displays. I also research the challenges people from LATAM face when working as HCI researchers.I was born in Mexico City. I have a degree in Animation and Digital Art at the Tecnologico de Monterrey and an MSc in Creative Media Technologies from the University of Tasmania. I completed her PhD at SIAT, Simon Fraser University (2020) and worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Virtro, where I tried to use 3D Spatio-temporal data to provide better feedback to students about their learning progress. Outside of academia, I have worked as a web developer, videogame designer and producer.
