About Mazda Kompanizare

Experienced computational hydrogeologist with a Ph.D. degree in Hydrogeology and over 20 years of experience in surface water/groundwater, saturated/unsaturated, analytical/numerical, watershed-scale/farm-scale simulations. Analytical solutions: • Developing semi-analytical LSM method to predict radial flow around wells. • Derivation of analytical solution of the flow around horizontal and slanted wells, using Greens’ function. • Drawing the capture zone around wells using complex variables. Analytical element method: Assessment of well capture zone and well head protection area (WHPA) using GFLOW, mostly in British Columbia.Surface flow models: • Assessment of the effect of surface mining on surface and shallow groundwater flow (PRMS, HPC-Compute Canada), Oil Sand, Alberta. • Assessment of groundwater-surface water interactions on stream flow for different climate scenarios (MESH, HPC-Compute Canada, Parallel computing, OSTRICH, NetCDF climate data), Great Lakes Basin.Surface water-groundwater interactions: • Assessment of the effect of surface mining on surface and shallow groundwater flow (GSFLOW), Oil Sand, Alberta.• Assessment of groundwater-surface water interactions on stream flow for different climate scenarios (Developing a new baseflow module in MESH, HPC-Compute Canada, Parallel computing, OSTRICH)Unsaturated groundwater flow: Assessment of open pit mining dewatering on surface environment (HYDRUS-3D), north of Ontario.Saturated groundwater:• Flow around wells: Assessment of well capture zone and well head protection areas (MODFLOW 6, MODPATH, PEST) • Flow in Peat layer: Simulation of radial flow around bore hole in the Auger Test in peat layer.

In University of Waterloo I was working on assessment of vertical percolation rates from the saturated surface layers to the fractures bedrock. I derived an analytical solution in them the thickness of one layer in the system was radially changed. Also I simulated the unsaturated flow in local and regional scales for a mine dewatering site by using HYDRUS3D.* Evaluated impact of mine dewatering on the surrounding environment and surface-groundwater interactions using variably saturated flow simulation.* Employed HYDRUS-3D to simulate flow in variably saturated layers around an open pit mine. * Measured the water level in peat layer and fine-grained marine sediment below the peat layer using multi-level observation well. * Assessed the barrier effect of the fine-grained marine sediment below the peat layers, for different bedrock layer saturations. * Assessed vertical hydraulic conductivity profile in peat layers by numerical groundwater simulation utilizing MODFLOW.
