About Mary Beth Monroe

Research Lab Web Page: https://monroebiomaterials.syr.edu/The Monroe Biomaterials Lab within the Syracuse Biomaterials Institute is focused on developing innovative materials to improve human health, using multidisciplinary skills in engineering, materials science, biology, chemistry, and medicine. Prior to joining SU, I served as the Lab Manager in the Biomedical Device Lab in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M. In this role, I mentored graduate students on novel chemistries for use in shape memory polymer scaffolds and in characterizing scaffold bioactivity, degradability, and retention of shape memory and mechanical properties. I was previously a NIH NRSA postdoctoral fellowship at the Texas A&M Health Science Center Institute of Biosciences and Technology at the Texas Medical Center in Houston. In this role, I engineered proteins for wound healing. Prior to my postdoc, I was a NSF graduate research fellow in Biomedical Engineering at Texas A&M, where I focused on the synthesis and characterization of a multilayer vascular graft for my dissertation. My prior research has provided me with a broad foundation in the principles of tissue engineering and a strong understanding of the interactions between synthetic polymer scaffolds, bioactive proteins, and cells. I love the research process of turning an idea into a tangible object and sharing findings with my research community, and I am passionate about mentoring others in their research and outreach.
