I am a human rights lawyer based in Cape Town. I currently work as a research and advocacy officer, responsible for legal research, analysis and public advocacy on issues relating to the judiciary in South Africa and other African countries. I’ve spent the last 9 years in the public interest legal sector in South Africa, and have done litigation, research and advocacy on human rights and constitutional law. I’ve had a particular focus on the right to housing, the right to education, freedom of assembly and the right to protest. In litigation, I’ve worked on cases at all levels of the SA court system from the district magistrates courts to the high courts (including the Land Claims Court and the Labour Court). I’ve also worked on cases in the Supreme Court of Appeal and a few at the Constitutional Court. I’ve also had the privilege of working on an amicus curiae brief before the UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (CESCR). On research, I’ve co-authored several legal and policy submissions to government, legislative and other forums in South Africa, and a submission to two UN treaty bodies: the CESCR and the Committee on Civil and Political Rights. On advocacy, I’ve worked with grassroots activists on building mobilisation campaigns. I’ve also worked with high level government officials, members of parliament and diplomats. I’ve written articles in all national newspapers in South Africa and I’m regularly quoted in the local and international press. I’ve done dozens of television and radio interviews on human rights and constitutional law topics.
