About Michelle Majore

End of Detour. For the past four years, I have been the export coordinator at a pet food manufacturing facility. I didn't have much experience in export - especially in pet food - so I am self-taught. During this time, I built up the export department, refined the processes to ship products abroad, and created the tools to produce the required documentation. Although I learned a lot and this experience was gratifying, I am ready to return to the human resources field. Why HR?People are the greatest asset a business can have. I have worked in many poorly managed businesses where employees were not valued or recognized for their contributions. Often, good quality workers would seek employment elsewhere hoping for a better working environment while mediocre workers remained. Management continued to employ these workers since seeking replacements requires effort. It is difficult to adhere to a top standard when employees aren’t productive or care about the quality of their work. It’s frustrating.I want to help create or maintain a working environment that recognizes employees as an investment, rather than an expense. Happy people are absent less, stay longer, and are more productive. Investing in people makes good business sense.

Listed skills include Customer Service, Time Management, Logistics, Microsoft Excel, and 27 others.

As the company was undergoing restructuring, our tasks changed frequently and my team and I needed to stay on top of our game plan.In order to develop job descriptions, we created a job analysis system to discern which skills were necessary to succeed in the position and at Pixel Union. Our first step in this process was to research the National Occupational Classification (NOC) and job descriptions from other companies in the hi-tech industry. With this knowledge, we developed questionnaires and interview questions for the employees at Pixel Union. We received approval to send out the questionnaires, however, the restructuring process was accelerated. My team and I then decided to interview the directors of each department to gain insight on the critical skills for each position. Next, we created a job profile template to keep all descriptions consistent. Finally, we wrote or edited all job descriptions and submitted them for approval. The other task we completed was the development and design of a Skills Matrix for use by directors, managers, and HR department to gather information about the various skills of which the Pixel Union team is comprised. Included with the matrix was an instruction guide that clearly explained the use and implementation of the Skills Matrix and a Skills Matrix survey from which to gather the pertinent information for the matrix. This internship with Pixel Union was an invaluable learning experience that helped expose my team and me to the pressures of real world Human Resources expectations. Although I still have a lot to learn, this experience assured me that I am on the right path. Show less

To this end, I developed a reference manual for new employees with step-by-step documentation for all aspects of the check-in and check-out processes. One of my tasks was to provide a positive guest experience, so I learned to coordinate with other departments, such as housekeeping and conference centre, to ensure all areas of the hotel were in sync with one another. As my experience grew, I was tasked with reading through resumes and making recommendations for potential hires. I also made a primary goal of listening to and supporting my team, which allowed me to develop conflict management skills to ease conflicts between co-workers, departments, and guests. Show less

As I had never previously worked in any logistics field, I had a steep learning curve!By taking the time to thoroughly understand my position, I was able to look objectively at the process and make suggestions. I collaborated with the company programmer to design worksheets for the warehouse using information the sales associates had already entered which saved time and reduced errors. I also designed a new shipping rates Excel spreadsheet which reduced the amount of time required to update rates when contracts changed. As the accounting department updated the accounts payable process, I had to learn quickly in order to not get behind.During my employment at SuperValu, the amount of product being shipped out more than doubled, yet I was able to keep on top of my workload through organizing and prioritizing my assignments. After my departure, SuperValu was required to assign the freight invoices to a sales associate and hire two more employees to fill my position. Show less
