Climate change, systemic racism, economic inequality, and other issues plague our culture. Layer over all of these the trauma we have all endured at some level with COVID. But the spotlight is on, finally. Maybe we can make collective, tangible progress now. However, media controls and distorts our culture’s feeling about these and our response. Corporate-owned mass media to duplicitous social media divide us to maintain power. Our best ideas are diminished into binary choices, made subservient to simplistic narratives. I want to help, using my experience and my artist’s eye for observation and synthesis. Creativity is but one approach to teaching; it begins with empathy to listen and believe. Its conclusion is a human, empathetic expression that might change someone’s perspective. We don’t convince anyone of anything; people come to their own realizations in time. But I hope to use the privilege I have to shine a light on what I've learned and unlearned. To invite reflection, to demonstrate to someone a new way of thinking about an issue. Any action helps, but focused action by each of us has more potential. Listening, observing before solving, creating *art* for communication purposes. Expressing it with clarity and empathy, while navigating the perils of demon platforms. I don't have the answers (obviously), but I believe that there are two driving factors: 1. It won't happen by individual effort; only a collective can achieve this 2. Each person is more potent in the collective by employing their "superpower" All my current work is guided by these principles: michaelboezi.com/now

Managing Director And Director Of MarketingLived Places PublishingBoston, Ma, Us -
Managing Director / Director Of MarketingLived Places Publishing Sep 2022 - PresentBoston, Massachusetts, United StatesI am part owner and managing director of a nascent publishing venture called Lived Places Publishing. The goals and mission of this project align well with the activist work I’m doing in other aspects of my life. For more details: https://michaelboezi.com/lppLived Places Publishing produces short (100- to 150-page) curriculum-ready course readings. They are organized into interdisciplinary collections, each led by a Collection Editor. Our books range from the autobiographical to the ethnographic, but they always center on the experience of social identity/identities and place/location. Each book is written with the advanced undergraduate student in mind, though many of our books are fit for a wider audience. We have launched 20 collections to date, including Black Studies, Disability Studies, Forced Migration Studies, Queer and LGBT+ Studies, Carceral Studies, and more. We are growing quickly, with 50 books published to date and 90+ more in development. 40+ institutions have purchased our library collections so far, including Georgetown University, University of Toronto, and Cambridge University. Our authors and editors cover the globe, from UKI, New Zealand, India, Canada, Nigeria, Germany, United States, and beyond. Most of our authors are academics, though we are seeking the voices of activists, organizers, journalists, and other practitioners as well. Our books cover a wide range of topics, with the aim of delivering myriad human perspectives to bolster the contemporary curriculum. Never has this need been more pressing as authoritarian voices and narratives of power are working hard to crowd out the variety of perspectives that build a tolerant and vibrant society. InstructorEmerson College Jan 2016 - PresentBoston, MaI teach a grad-level course at Emerson College called "Fundamentals of Content Strategy," all about developing content as a business asset and using it to achieve specific business goals. Because I believe that students learn by doing, teaching, collaborating, and experimenting, I designed and created this course as a dynamic live project where students work alone and in groups to get experience in the planning and execution of an effective content strategy to build an audience. -

Vice President, StrategyProlific Works (Formerly Instafreebie) Jul 2013 - Dec 2013Cambridge, MaThis was an early-stage startup when I was involved, seeking to help talented authors of all types have the careers they choose in the digital age. The platform (called "Libboo" at the time) empowered authors by providing real-time analytics about their most engaged fans and readers – kind of a "Google Analytics for Authors." The data dashboard was the first of its kind, giving authors usable insights into their audience based on behavioral data. The company now goes by the name Prolific Works.I started as an early advisor to the founders in 2012, but joined full time at a pivotal point in the company's development. My focus was: • Brand management. I drove the company's strategic direction. I unified, clarified, and reduced the message about the company's mission.• Content strategy. Led the strategy to inspire under-served authors to build their own brand, while establishing Libboo as a thought leader in the sector. • Community growth. Employed inbound marketing and growth hacking techniques to attract author partners and their reader advocates. Grew the client base from 30 to 500 in 3 months. • Business Development. Transformed the product into a scalable business. Directed the go-to-market strategy for both B2C and B2B. -
Vice President, Content & CommunityFlat World Knowledge Mar 2009 - Mar 2013Boston, MaWhen I joined, Flat World Knowledge was a brand new entrant in the higher education textbook industry. I was responsible for all aspects of content, from acquiring, developing, and licensing textbook content to inbound marketing and content marketing.Editorial Director, 2009–2011I was a part of the core group that built the company from the ground up. I was hired at the Series A round, charged with building a brand new catalog of college textbooks from scratch:• Acquired 82 core textbooks in under 3 years, including 22 of the top 25 enrolling markets.• Designed and implemented a book development process from scratch to publish quality content efficiently—in about half the time and at nearly a tenth of the cost of the legacy publishers.• Produced and delivered 57 first editions in under 3 years. The catalog contains over 100 professionally developed, peer-reviewed titles now.• Made a tangible impact on the industry. By fall semester 2012, our books were actively in use in over 4,000 classrooms, and had served 725,000+ students.VP of Content and Community, 2011–2013After building the foundation of a strong product catalog, I expanded my role to shape the company’s future by:• Building out my concept of Community Around Content, cultivating invested curators to improve existing content and create new content.• Transforming the marketing philosophy of customer acquisition from purely outbound strategies to more inbound and content marketing.• Opening more channels for direct user feedback, and rebuilding the review process so that it was ongoing rather than episodic.• Redesigning the platform to transfer more control of our content to our users, and atomizing our content to enable more remixing and reuse.• Licensing our content to innovative third party distributors and course providers, and establishing a consistent "born digital" content architecture that made such deals easy and efficient. -

Acquisitions EditorJohn Wiley & Sons Jul 2002 - Oct 2004Hoboken, Nj• Managed all aspects of an $8M list in Calculus and Finite Mathematics/Applied Calculus.• Analyzed market dynamics, identified potential for new products, and targeted top educators to write, review, or contribute to texts and ancillaries. I signed 6 titles, totaling $3.28M in projected first year revenue.• Assessed profitability of existing titles, and developed and proposed business plans for potential revisions. I strategized with marketing to devise and implement alternate product versions to reduce attrition.• Worked with my product team, authors, and contributors to prepare and deliver manuscript, media, and supplements to the market. -
Marketing ManagerAddison Wesley Sep 1997 - Jun 2002Boston, Ma• Responsible for the marketing and promotion of Addison-Wesley’s Calculus and Statistics list ($21M in annual revenue).
