About Maria Boustead

I'm a tenacious optimistic. When I hear "That's not going to work", I think, "Well, how about this". When I hear, "That's a bad idea", I think, "Oh just you wait and see".I’m currently building Po Campo, the lifestyle brand for people who are or want to be a part of the mobility revolution; our transitional, functional, stylish, and sustainable bags make micro-mobility a better and more seamless part of their lives. The design thinking skills that I've internalized over the years are incredibly helpful in all aspects of life, but in particular in building a business, which has got to be the greatest – and most fun – design challenge of all.

Listed skills include Design Strategy, Industrial Design, Packaging, Product Design, and 27 others.

I had the idea for Po Campo when I couldn't find a bag versatile enough to take on my bike commutes and then carry with me throughout the day. I often felt like I had to make a nonsensical choice, either the joy of biking to work or the pleasure of having a bag on my shoulder that I really loved.I also wanted to solve this problem for others. I noticed how more and more people were using their bikes for transportation all the time, riding in their everyday clothes, and guessed they were similarly looking for crossover product. The bike industry at the time was still focused on biking as a sport or like a tough bike messenger thing. I wanted to create a brand that helped make biking a better and more seamless part of people's lives so that they could experience its freedom and joy every day.Since launching in 2009, and then relaunching in 2020, we've accomplished the following:- Millions in revenue and thousands of customers- Three product collections to equip the whole family- Sold worldwide, and available in respected retailers like REI- Developed our proprietary Visi-Hemp® fabric, the world's first reflective hemp fabric- Built a diverse team of people who share my commitment to helping people get out of their cars and into the bike lane with superior product- Raised a round of capital- Donated over $35,000 to charities that improve bike infrastructure and/or make biking more accessible

Downy, Tide, Olay, Kotex, Yellowtail, 3M ScotchBlueI had worked with some of our clients at places like P&G for years and knew they cared deeply about making meaningful connections to their consumers. Each of their brands were so different, so why were their design briefs always so similar? It occurred to me that our agency could provide more value to our clients if we were able to assist them further upstream in their process. I persuaded our most loyal clients to let us help them craft their brand strategy so that the brief would yield the design work that the brand deserved, and a new design strategy capability at the agency was born.- Conducted design research and design strategy programs for brands Downy, Scotch Blue, Level Vodka, Olay, among others.- Increased research and strategy billings from 2% to 20% of agency fees by growing and training an internal team and assisting in new business development.- Created and led naming and brand story workshops that invited clients to engage with WdV at a strategic level. Most workshops resulted in robust design programs.- Continually evolved methods to stay on the forefront of research techniques with an internal thinktank connecting developments in social science, marketing and design.

Mobil 1, Secret, CoverGirl, Head & ShouldersSometimes you fall into something that turns out to be a perfect fit. I never set out to work in structural packaging design, but its combination of right- and left-brain thinking suited me well. I learned how powerful branding and design can be when working in tandem, laying the groundwork for my work since then.- Designed structural packaging for clients like Mobil 1 and Downy, working from initial design research stages through production.- Structural packaging design from sketch to CAD refinement.- Established an internal technical and sustainability library by cataloging 150+ vendor samples and packaging innovations in an intranet database.
