Technical Proposal Product Engineer
Oe Semi-Active Product Engineer
As a product engineer dedicated to a single project at a time, I am responsible for maintaining drawings, BOMs, and various VA/VE activities surrounding my project. As of January 2021, I have been working on the new 2021 RAM 1500 TRX which I helped develop as a co-op and have continued to work on as a full time engineer. This experience has allowed me to gain a lot of experience in various fields listed below- Production engineering drawings- Engineering BOM updates- Customer communication- Internal change management- Customer change management- Supplier development- Supply chain management- Plant operations- Formal problem solvingOne of the largest tasks I had to tackle in this position was a supplier development/supply chain issue where a supplier failed to meet expectations and this required on-site support for 8 weeks lead by myself. This experience helped me develop the skills needed to define a production plan and execute accordingly with constant report outs to my team off site.
Product Engineering Co-Op
Throughout my multiple internships at Bilstein, I fulfilled multiple roles all of which involved product engineering. As a passive product engineer, I was responsible for assisting OE passive product engineers with day to day tasks like component stack ups, 3D CAD modeling and drawings in both SolidWorks and CATIA, and validation testing. In this role I worked primarily with customers who built light duty trucks such as RAM 1500, RAM 2500/3500, Nissan Frontier/Titan, Toyota Tacoma. I spent 2 semesters as an OE passive product engineering co-op before transitioning to a new co-op position. As a Technology and Innovation (T&I) product engineering co-op, I focused on more advanced stack ups, 3D modeling, FEA, and MATLAB simulations. This role allowed me to expand into a more experimental and theory based group that otherwise couldn't function within the constraints of an existing OE application. While working in this group, I helped develop new technology that is now being used on both the 2021 Ford Bronco and 2021 RAM TRX. I also held the primary responsibility of building wire harness adapters used to control prototype vehicles with algorithm based damping control. These controllers are capable of receiving inputs from auxiliary sensors as well as on board CAN-bus to respond to vehicle events. My T&I role eventually transitioned into an acquisitions product engineering role where I brought some of my skills utilized in prototype vehicle fit-up to our OE acquisitions team. I helped bridge the gap between T&I and OE by working to refine new technology to fit OE requirements including performance and cost. This also involved some specialty projects that involved one-off OE vehicles, professional race team projects, and Department of Defense prototype contracts.
Process Engineering Co-Op
As a process engineering co-op, I was responsible for following the process engineer in charge of Production Unit 1 (APU1). APU1 was the first step in the process converting raw aluminum sheet into rough components that would be used for radiators and condensers. This role provided me with a lot of exposure to best practices in design for manufacturing as well as some component design and drawing creation for equipment upgrades. I also learned a significant amount about document and process control to ensure consistent output of finished goods. This role did involve some aspects of quality engineering as well since the quality team was spread a little thin during my time here. Some of the responsibilities typically handled by quality were performed by myself and other interns to ensure proper application of flux and also ensure a complete forming of rolled material.
