I currently serve as the Chief of Police overseeing a medium-sized, CALEA Law Enforcement Accredited, law enforcement agency in the Des Moines metropolitan area. The Waukee Police Department is a full-service, modern, and progressive law enforcement agency serving the fastest-growing city in the State of Iowa. In 2022, the City was ranked the #7 safest city in Iowa by Safewise. The current Waukee population is approximately 32,000 residents making Waukee the 16th largest City in Iowa. The population nearly doubled in the past decade, including an increase of approximately 8,000 between 2020 and 2024. The Waukee Police Department is comprised of the Community Protection Division (CPD), which includes patrol/SROs/Crisis Intervention Team and the Special Services Division, which includes Investigations/Records/Administration. The department currently has an authorized strength of 36 sworn. The Waukee Police Department was one of the first in the area to implement a full-time Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) co-responder program and we achieved CALEA accreditation in March of 2024.

As the Public Safety Director / Chief of Police, I serve as the Executive Department Head for both a full-time, full-service Police Department and a full-time Fire/EMS Department. While the resident population is just over 5,000, the City is nestled in the heart of the Des Moines metro area (700,000 plus population) and the transient population increases the size of the community to around 30,000 daily. The City is home to the only Cannabinol dispensary in Central Iowa, the busiest public transportation (DART) stop outside of downtown Des Moines, and a walking/biking trail with an estimated 440,000 people per year traversing the entire trail system adding complexity to law enforcement considerations. The sworn police officers are represented by the Teamsters collective bargaining union and the Fire Department is represented by the International Association of Firefighters. Chief of Police functions include oversight of patrol, investigations, records, and information technology for the City. Fire Chief functions include oversight of career, part-time and paid-on-call firefighters, and oversight of EMS/Ambulance services, including medical response billing.

I was promoted to Sergeant / Watch Commander at 24 years old, just over 2 years out of the basic law enforcement academy. I was a highly respected leader in the Kansas law enforcement and fire service community. As a member of a combined police and fire department’s command staff, I served as the watch commander for a patrol crew for over nineteen years, after being promoted to Watch Commander 2 years after basic training. Duties included policy writing, assisting with budgets, supervision of patrol and conducting complex investigations.In addition to being a Sergeant / Watch Commander in charge of a patrol crew, I was assigned my first police K9 partner in 2000. I worked three (3) K9s over the next 18 years, maintaining my role as a watch commander as well. My first dog was a single purpose, narcotics only dog (2000-2003); my second dog was a dual purpose patrol/narcotics dog (2003-2011); and my third dog was a SWAT Dual Purpose patrol / narcotics dog. I obtained my Master Trainer certification in 2011 and was a highly respected K9 expert in Kansas and surrounding states. I also instructed K9 utilization courses and case law cases throughout the State of Kansas.
