I am a full-service technology and intellectual property attorney, with a long-standing specialized expertise in free and open source licensing (software as well as hardware and content). I have deep expertise in patent law (having started as a USPTO patent examiner over 34 years ago), including prosecution, litigation and licensing. I also have a long-standing interest in copyright issues as they relate to technology.I spent 20 years in-house administering all intellectual property matters for both hardware and software business groups for a Fortune 50 technology company, including IP transactional work (corporate patent cross-licensing, collaboration agreements, and M&A deals), IP counseling (primarily patent, copyright and trade secrets), as well as patent analysis, patent litigation, copyright and trade secret analysis, IP-antitrust and general commercial law issues. Before working in-house, I was a lawyer in private practice at a boutique intellectual property law firm splitting time between patent prosecution, patent litigation, and various other IP tasks like opinions.As part of my sub-specialty in free and open source software licensing, I am quite active with various entities (including the Open Source Initiative) on understanding and debating various licensing and policy issues.
