Senior Research Associate

Winnipeg, Canada Area

I am lead web developer and managing editor for the Climate Atlas of Canada, and contribute my technical expertise and communicative talents to many projects at the Prairie Climate Centre. I engage in primary and secondary research into narrative structures, cognitive biases, and the overall effectiveness of various approaches to climate change communication. I help ensure that the communications activities of the PCC are based in best practices drawn from current cognitive social science. I wrote and/or edited the majority of the textual content of the website, and plan, strategize, and manage ongoing research and outreach projects. I also co-lead internal organisational development for this rapidly growing research institute, which has included shaping mission, vision, and values statements, determining best practices and effective tools for project management, meetings, and reporting, and working with fellow staff and directors on matters of strategy and governance. As technical lead and full-stack developer, I built and maintain the innovative Climate Atlas of Canada website, which brings GIS/mapping, video, and writing together with numerical and graphical climate model data to make climate change meaningful for Canadians. The Climate Atlas of Canada (climateatlas.ca) was created using Drupal, Leaflet, ArcGIS, and many other tools. I protoyped early concepts using a variety of additional tools including Bolt, Symfony, MapBox, and Openlayers. I designed flexible and modular front- and back-end approaches to web application, web mapping, and management and analytics. This involved extensive custom code developed atop open source tools to deliver a high standard of design and performance. I set up server infrastructure to handle web services and ArcServer GIS data, including extensive DevOps work such as load testing and reverse proxy caching server configuration to handle national-scale traffic.
