About Marco Cestaro

Using information to make insight driven decisions and drive efficient process is at the heart of Business Intelligence(BI) and the work I do. My non-IT education combined with hands on experience providing scalable, world-class technical solutions has allowed me to become a BI professional that can bridge the gap between business needs and IT. As a leader, I strive to create an ensemble where professionals can come together, know and play their part, to perform for our audience. I have always found that greatness in just about everything is as much art as it is science.

  • Sandstone Project
    Founder
    Sandstone Project Jan 2014 - Jun 2017
This project brings together my background in BI and restaurants into a concept that I have been developing for years. The Force.com platform, in conjunction with core SalesForce functionality and the SalesForce One mobile app, have provided the framework for me to develop a new system. For the initial prototype I am configuring SalesForce Cases, Opportunities, Campaigns, and Chatter Communities. A customer facing app and two other mobile staff interfaces are built with VisualForce pages, APEX, and Visual Workflows. The initial social integration is with Facebook, since SalesForce provides extensive documentation on that.As the system moves from prototype to field testing, I will finish the business plan in preparation for a soft launch. It is exciting to see technology progress to the point that this project is possible and I am fortunate enough to have an opportunity to work on it.
  • Board Of Regents Of The University System Of Georgia
    Director Of Data Services
Board Of Regents Of The University System Of Georgia Jan 2012 - Jan 2014
    Atlanta, Georgia, Us
As the director of a newly formed department, it was my charge to bring together Data Warehousing or "development" and Business Intelligence or "reporting." My approach was to create the Georgia Institutional Intelligence program. “A set of services and technologies in support of creating a more educated Georgia through information supported decision making.” This entailed things like:* Work with stakeholders to establish role of Data Services in IT, the USG System Office, the USG at large, and the state longitudinal data system * Create a new staffing plan resulting in lower headcount and reduced personal services cost* Determine budgets for and manage state and federal funds* Participate and lead sub-committees for the newly formed data governance program At the same time the USG was two years into a four year federal grant driven project to redevelop the entire data warehouse and BI system that was in danger of falling behind schedule. The stakeholders were not seeing the business value of their investment, giving the project a negative perception. Here are a some of the outcomes from my work:* Implemented formal project and resource management to plan and track work and determine impact of scope changes* Changed to an iterative warehouse development approach from a "big bang" implementation* Provided mobile content via IBM Cognos BI to the Board of Regents* Set Data Warehouse and BI strategy, methodology, and technologies to match best practice, not just "previous practice"Don't worry, I was able to keep my feet on the ground due to multiple vacancies on my staff of 16. This allowed me to do the following work:* Use Oracle Data Integrator to create an Operational Data Store for Academic and HR data* Create an online data verification application in Oracle APEX * Conduct a Strategic Planning for Information Access engagement with a USG institution
  • Suny Sicas Center
    Business Intelligence Solution Specialist
Suny Sicas Center Jan 2010 - Jun 2012
The title for this position belies the true scope and responsibility that it had. (the full title with no acronyms is Business Intelligence Solution Specialist for the State University of New York Student Information and Campus Administrative Systems Center...ya that's alot for a business card) As the first BI Solution Specialist my focus was on creating a BI program that supported the 64 institutions of the SUNY System. This allowed me to bring together my previous success with my own BI program with many of the concepts I had been presenting into a scalable, cloud-based services and technologies offering that could be applied to any size organization. This intrapreneurial effort required a full business plan from infrastructure to go-to-market strategies. The program had to be done utilizing other SUNY agencies across the state, each with their own governing bodies and priorities. The resulting SICAS BI Program had projected break even "sales" in the fourth year. Customer subscription costs were lower than the cost of one BI professional and the minimum infrastructure needed for a "local" data warehouse and BI toolset. Here are some of the specifics that I was responsible for:* Conducted Strategic Planning for Information Access engagements for four institutions* Extended a third-party data store to support multiple organizations and custom source systems using Oracle Warehouse Builder and Oracle Streams technologies* Administration of and development in an Oracle Business Intelligence Enterprise Edition+ environment, metadata (RPD), and example content
  • Ithaca College
    Manager, Business Intelligence
    Ithaca College Nov 2000 - Dec 2009
    Ithaca, Ny, Us
My original charge was to train staff on Oracle Discoverer...and by the way you need to create the data warehouse behind it from scratch. From there I developed an Operational Data Store based on reporting requirements and architected a Data Warehouse by adapting the Kimball DW Lifecycle. Over the course of my time in this position I was able to create and/or participate in everything from data governance to network topology.
  • Ithaca College
    Instructor
    Ithaca College Aug 2006 - Jan 2008
    Ithaca, Ny, Us
After years of supporting the academic mission of IC, I had the good fortune to get back into the classroom. It is always interested me how teaching the abstract concepts of music translate into teaching and understanding the concepts of computer science. The course was CS 110, Intro to Comp. Sci., taken by non-CS majors, which focused on practical uses of technology. While it wasn't detailed database design or java scripting, relating why and how these skills are essential for their future was very much the same as bridging the gap between business and technology. You think it is hard to get buy in for information-driven decisions from your executive team? Try getting a class full of college students engaged at 8:00AM for a required, non-major class.
  • Cestaro Brother'S Restaurant And Bar
    President/Chief Financial Officer
Cestaro Brother'S Restaurant And Bar Feb 2007 - Sep 2008
After growing up working in our family restaurant, my brothers and I decided to open our own place. My role was to run the business side of the house from my home office in Ithaca, NY while they ran the operations on-site. The full business and financial plan I developed won us both secured and unsecured bank funding. In addition to running the back-of-the-house operations, I configured and supported the PixelPoint POS system.
  • Arturo'S
    General Manager
    Arturo'S 1998 - 2000
When our "to-go" family restaurant moved to full table-service I was a major contributor to the design kitchen design of our new location. We saw a 110% increase in gross sales, but were able to maintain the same staffing levels with the efficiencies gained from the new design and operations.Once open, my responsibilities grew from managing a few seasonal folks to managing the daily activities for 40 waitpersons, kitchen staff, and dish crew. As the lead cook, I oversaw all food operations and maintained inventory for this fast-paced Italian restaurant.
