Andrew J. McGovern is a neuroscientist at the University of Limerick who studies sex differences in neurological disease. He joined the neurosciences in University College Cork studying sex differences in the brain following early life stress in relation to anxiety. After this Andrew joined the University of Limerick as a teaching assistant before being offered a scholarship to study sex differences (genetic and hormonal) in metabolism. He hopes this work may explain sex differences in diseases, validate the need to study sex differences and women’s health in further detail which he hopes could inform more precise treatment strategies of all people, as he described in his TEDx talk ‘Overcoming the Last Mile in Medicine’. He is an award-winning science communicator (FameLab 2020 national audience choice winner) who talks science on his podcast Living Room Logic which peaked at #1 science podcast in Ireland, to which he was awarded 2nd place as a rising star across all of Irish podcasting in 2022. He is on TikTok and Instagram @ScientistIreland which has over 10m views, and 35’000 followers. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Andrew was invited by a member of NPHET to communicate COVID-19 information to young adults. This work was highlighted by the European Centre of Disease Control as best practice in COVID-19 and vaccine communications. Currently, Andrew is working in the School of Medicines in UCD working on microcredential initiatives making continued professional education more accessible, which he hopes could work towards the creation of accessible upskilling for medical professionals in women’s health, and for workers in STEM in science communication.
