malcolm.hart@psworld.co.uk ★ My career in shipping started back in the 70s as a ship broker on the Baltic exchange. A time before PCs and mobile phones when the telex machine was king in the communications world. On the floor Baltic the world’s oldest shipping market, with its motto “Our Word Our Bond”, ship charters were negotiated in person during the trading session. Back in the office the negotiation would be confirmed by telex which was then, and still is, considered a legal document. It is difficult to imagine these days how frenetic the communications room was with the banks of telex machines chattering away and transmitting just 60 words per minute. In the late 80s I moved into the communications world to specialise in providing services to the maritime industry. Initially providing ship to shore telex services that significantly reduced costs for the shipowners with some 3000 ships connected to a network. I have continually embraced the latest satellite technology to develop unique and bespoke solutions for our maritime customers.
