About Mckay Roozen

At a career crossroads and want to be strategic about your next step? You’re only halfway into your professional life, but so far, it’s been pretty stellar. You’ve learned quickly, helped build amazing teams, and are a high performer who sets the bar for excellence. However, you’ve felt a bit lost lately.Your early career goals no longer feel relevant. Creating impact is still a priority, but you’re no longer naive to the fact your job is just... a job.Maybe you're wondering what to do next, but the answer is buried under dozens of open tabs of job descriptions. So you’ve tried to get unstuck by:🌪️ Hitting “Easy Apply” on random LinkedIn job posts(which feels like a step forward, except you never hear back)🌪️ Thinking your way to an answer(which just makes you feel overwhelmed)🌪️ Taking a back seat at work(which doesn’t feel authentic to who you are)You start to wonder if you’ve aged out of enjoying work.If this lands with you, you’re not alone. The number ONE mistake I see people 10-15 years into a successful career - but unhappy in their job - make?👉 They choose inaction because they keep waiting for the next step to happen *TO* them. They lose confidence when they think about starting over in a new role. So they stay because re-taking ownership of their career requires believing that they’re not just a one-hit wonder.Instead, what you need to do is:✨ Define your legacy ✨Suddenly it becomes easy to chart a new path, strategize your next step, and bring it into fruition. You start to feel hopeful again with a renewed motivation to not settle. My clients experience all of this and more...🚀 ”I was stuck in an extremely toxic work environment, applying for lots of jobs and getting nowhere. Because of working with McKay, I secured a new job in a different industry with a title bump and a 90% salary increase.” — Jenna🚀 “Before working with McKay, I struggled with identifying roles that allowed me to showcase my skill set. I now have the confidence to strive for a role that I once viewed as unattainable.” — Charlene🚀 ”I was in a job that didn't respect my boundaries. I felt undervalued and had difficulty separating my work identity from my personal life. McKay was so important in helping me sort out my priorities, advocate for myself, and find the perfect job! Things are going AMAZING over here.” — CeliaAre you tired of feeling stuck and ready to get back to being fulfilled by your career?Send me a DM or book a time here to explore next steps: https://calendly.com/mckayroozen/career-consultation

If you’ve made it this far, you want to know how can I REALLY help you...✅ Get Clarity: Understand exactly what your next steps should be.✅ Make an Impactful Career Transition: Be held (by me!) while you take action.✅ Position Yourself in a Competitive Job Market: Craft a compelling career story.✅ Get the Offer: Land a new job with mentorship, a drool-worthy compensation increase, and plenty of room to grow. Hi, I’m McKay, your career coach and mentor. 👋I’ve guided 50+ clients to re-discover what’s possible in their careers and take the steps to actualize that potential. However YOU want to shift, I can help.Just like I helped my client Amanda. ~ ~ ~Amanda — in her early-30’s — works for a late-stage SaaS company. When she came to me she:🫥 Woke up each morning feeling stressed and anxious about the day ahead🫥 Worked in a toxic environment for a company that didn’t respect her 🫥 Felt unchallenged, unfulfilled, and overworked🫥 Needed clarity on the type of work she *actually* wanted to be doingThe first step I took to help Amanda gain clarity on what was at the heart of her career dissatisfaction was to guide her through one simple question:→ What do you want your legacy to be? We discussed her vision for the future. Then we took it a level deeper: → → How can you build a path to get there, starting with your next step? Thinking about change and wishing for change to happen to you will NOT yield change.Once we know the legacy we’re capable of building, it’s easy to take action. Just like Amanda who landed a new role, and is feeling fulfilled by her work and supported by her team. When you get the right coach to guide you towards clarity, hope, ease, and desire will return. And that rejuvenation feels STELLAR.Why? Because your potential, your goals, and your magic are in full alignment. If you’re ready to get unstuck and take the next step, then LFG my friend. DM me the word LEAP, and I’ll take things from there 😉
  • Mcgraw Hill
    Director, Partnerships
    Mcgraw Hill Jul 2020 - Jul 2021
    New York, Ny, Us
My time at McGraw Hill rounded out my experience in tech and startups. I was hired as "that startup chick" and was charged with infusing the company with innovation and building out partnerships that would bring MGH into the Tech conversation. I learned a ton about how to create value in a big corporate behemoth, and the importance of helping my boss be successful. Additionally, I: 🎯 Led early M&A conversations with executives across product, strategy, and engineering teams🎯 Developed a data-driven business case for the CEO on a new EdTech innovation strategy🎯 Developed six-figure licensing deals, globally🎯 Managed teams of consultants🎯 Built partnership development and account management strategies
  • Coursera
    Associate Director, Strategic Partnerships
    Coursera Mar 2019 - Apr 2020
    Mountain View, Ca, Us
I pivoted from doing BD at Udemy to doing long-term horizon partnerships at Coursera by centering my narrative on my extensive background in Asia. I was brought in to run all partnerships in Asia. Over time, I expanded my scope to include European and American accounts. These intentional role adjustments increased my optionality and allowed me to be regional-agnostic. I leveraged my (literally) universal sales experience to take on bigger and bigger partnerships. I joined Coursera in Series C when the focus was on new revenue channels, and shifting to B2B and higher-ticket learning experiences. Here are my highlights: ⭐️ Managed pipeline of top-ranked global university partners: sourced content that will drive ~$X0M in revenue over first five years by presenting executive stakeholders with data-backed value propositions⭐️ Sourced Certificate program from the University of Chicago: developed champion at the university; worked cross-functionally with marketing team to identify product-market fit ⭐️ Sourced Russia’s first online degree from top-tier university: rallied engineering, legal, and marketing to prioritize program despite complex terms ⭐️ Built sales strategy: worked with C-suite to provide recommendations to the Board of Directors on how Coursera could grow pipeline, improve win rate, and shorten sales cycle ⭐️ Oversaw Coursera’s only Ivy League online degree program: served as the Voice of the Customer to internal stakeholders; scaled impact by customizing messaging to partner’s unique priorities⭐️ Rolled out changes to revenue payment structure that affected ~200 partners: worked cross-functionally with finance and legal to identify solution to complex accounting issues; developed and led communications plan⭐️ Implemented quarterly business review process: built framework and collateral that encouraged teammates to build results-driven, data-backed strategies that aligned with Coursera’s annual and quarterly OKRs

I made the pivot from teaching to Tech by highlighting my resilience and comfort with data. I joined Udemy shortly after the Series C fundraise, at a critical time when the company culture was maturing, but the leadership team was still pushing for fast-paced growth. Here's what I did on a functional level: 🚀 Oversaw global portfolio of 15 accounts: drove revenue through partnership with Singaporean government by building localization strategy, increasing content volume, and managing local operations team🚀 Reframed partnership with Western Union: empowered Syrian refugees to teach and earn money through the platform; obtained buy-in from product and legal to adapt go-to-market strategy for NGO partnerships

  • Vipkid
    Classroom Teacher & Consultant
    Vipkid 2014 - 2016
    San Francisco, California, Us
I had the great privilege to get in on the ground floor of one of the world's biggest EdTech companies. I started as a part-time English instructor, virtually teaching elementary school children who lived all over China. The role quickly evolved to include curriculum development and working very closely with the Beijing team to build VIPKid's biggest asset: a high-quality learning experience.
  • Unicef
    Policy Advisor
    Unicef Aug 2014 - Dec 2014
    New York, New York, Us
I worked closely with a local UNICEF program officer to develop a teacher training curriculum for the Vanuatu school district. It was a valuable opportunity to support a hands-on leader who was reforming and up-leveling the local school system.
  • Teach For China
    Teaching Fellow, Program Manager
    Teach For China 2012 - 2014
    Chaoyang District, Beijing, Cn
Have you ever tried to teach a bunch of third graders in a mountainside village while the power is out and while a few of them are trying to put a leash on a beetle? 🪲No? Well, I'll save you the plane ticket and tell you that it is equal parts thrilling, frustrating, fulfilling, and maddening. This experience in rural China helped me discover my resilience, taught me a ton about structural power and poverty dynamics, and gave me an opportunity to perfect my Mandarin (albeit, I do have a very strong farmer's twang). In addition, I worked with the local government, school leadership, local teachers, and students to create community-centered social entrepreneurship projects. I also raised the average English scores of over 200 elementary students by over 40 percentage points.
  • The Pentok Institute
    Research Fellow
The Pentok Institute May 2011 - Jul 2011
This experience in Tibet has probably landed me on China's blacklist, but it was worth it to develop my honor's thesis on the reasons why women in rural Tibetan communities were disproportionately affected by Chinese education policies.
