About Cole Mckussic

I launch and grow companies. Through dozens of engagements and (literally) a pair of my own start-ups, my job - as consultant, business analyst, cross-functional team-lead, founder, evangelist, storyteller, or "the guy here to fix Hubspot" - can be extremely diverse. I’ve learned there are no "silver bullets" but I’ve found the path to growth by being adaptable, creative, persuasive, and collaborative. In ideal situations, I employ analytical reasoning and data to rationalize the best way forward; I haven’t encountered a ton of ideal situations. With early-stage ventures, (scant data at my disposal and a fluidly defined role), I use informed guessing, intuition, and experience to get as many proverbial balls airborne as quickly as possible. I identify customer segments and touch-points, improvise a strategic framework, set goals and timelines, untangle branding and messaging to forge a cohesive narrative, create and deploy assets, implement systems and teams, launch marketing programs, secure partnerships, and acquire targeted customers. (I don’t shy away from getting my hands dirty.) In growth scenarios, I lean on data analysis to dictate direction and build a timeline of progress and results. I’m adept at interpreting data from a variety of sources - web and app analytics, sem and seo results, focus group, survey, sales, crm, marketing automation, customer retention - and I’m always excited to learn something new. With analysis as the backbone, I’m more confident in what tactic or promotional strategy I pursue; it’s lovely to be able to justify the dive into a new tool, (A/B, customer interviews, focus groups, user testing), a new tactic, (display network advertising, retargeting, pr), or a tactical shift, (moving into - or away from - content marketing, social media influencers, direct sales). Ultimately, my success, (or failure - we’re not even going to talk about covid), rests on my ability to communicate. There is nothing more powerful than a clear, resonant message, delivered in compelling fashion, to the right audience. My greatest successes - and this is true regardless of audience, (internal stakeholders, customer segments, distribution partners, or whomever), and regardless of domain, (digital marketing, live in-person demo, zoom call, therapy session)... my greatest successes have come from my ability to have some idea what I’m talking about, what my audience cares about, and how much flair is appropriate.
