The Guild exists to change the culture, skills & delivery capabilities of National Australia Bank. I run large scale training & immersion programmes, leveraging partners, learning platforms, virtual classroom delivery and hands on workshops, resulting in over 1500 people certified in cloud technologies and 7000 people trained. Tackling the problems of wider engineering practices, we run an engineering bootcamp to drive capability uplift and align development teams on common ways of working and shared components. This removes the undifferentiated heavy lifting so that teams can focus on adding customer value faster. We create an environment for innovation by creating Innovation hackathons where teams can rapidly prototype solutions to show business value and to create new ideas from cutting edge tech. Our Inner Source programme office was founded after finding we had teams creating duplication in tools, to very different levels of quality and support. By building an operating and governance model based on Open Source principles, balanced with the required architectural and security controls, I enabled teams to safely share endorsed technical components and to accept changes from outside collaborators. This has led to significant costs savings (> $30m) through reuse of software, better quality and faster speed to customer. It also have the additional benefits of higher employee satisfaction as engineers have the opportunity to work on what interests them, learning new skills and enabling senior engineers to mentor junior engineers. Inner Source directly feeds their sense of autonomy, mastery and purpose which drives a better work culture. We have also published NAB’s first ever Open Source package, the uBank iOS accessibility testing kit for validating that iOS apps were digital accessible. We felt that it was vital to contribute back to the community and help more companies be more inclusive by building digitally accessibly apps.

We’ve improved service levels by putting reliability first, leading to a developer experience beyond all recognition and took NAB’s first highly confidential material workload to public cloud, a first for banking in Australia. Part of a global change programme to increase speed to market of key trading products by introducing agile practises and improving testing across a worldwide organization. Setting up a pan-European operational support capability with teams in Slovakia, Germany and UK. Team-by-Team we did initial interviews leading to analysis Q&A sessions to discover how they worked and what we could do to improve their performance in real business terms. Training courses, floor walking and post-rollout feedback.• Remodelled the change management process for the Endur trading platform & rolled out global change reporting.• Transformed Back Office processes by streamlining common requests.• Integrated testing capability between Jira & HP Quality Centre, to help the Slovakian test team & the German developers work seamlessly together during test cycles, encouraging faster & higher quality releases.• Designed migration processes for old issue trackers into Jira & cross training dev teams.• Migrated existing wiki content from legacy systems to a centralized Confluence service.

Lead Java developer responsible for implementing a J2EE front end for a major in-sourcing project, involved bringing an entire pensions department in from an external supplier for one of the largest final salary pension schemes in the UK in under 18 months. https://pensionline.bp.com/content/pl/• Reverse engineered obscure, undocumented, pension calculations for PensionLine, a portal allowing interactive projections to be run via website.• Created automated test framework that compared calculation results between UAT and a reference system.• Built EJB layer that interfaced to the Aquila Oracle application in the back-end.• Worked 1-on-1 with Actuaries to define, write & test new A-day calculations.• Created interactive pension calculators to illustrate the impact of varying pension contributions.• Built load-testing toolkit to ensure performance metrics were achieved.• Introduced W3C web accessibility standards during a site revision to enable universal access.
