Engineering Manager, Looker Service ArchitectureGoogle Aug 2021 - Nov 2023Mountain View, Ca, UsI've lead a number of teams within Looker, including:1. Service Architecture - The Service Architecture team is responsible for the core platform aspects of the Looker system, including custom built caching, messaging, clustering, encryption, performance and general security of the product. With the support of my team of ~13 engineers, I was able to eliminate the top 3 causes of availability challenges in 2022, while also bringing forth a new global configuration and release management engine. Lastly, we also revamped our message queuing sysytems, which reduced a specific failure event from a daily occurrence to near 0.2. Query Management - The QM team (4 employees) is responsible for all query execution in the Looker platform, against all supported dialects/databases. In 2022, we redesigned our query tracking system, resulting in a 28% inprovement in overall query latency, as well as developed systems for deep tracking of query status and general observability. In 2023, we developed a new single-queue based query execution mechanism, resulting in an ~80% reduction in customer impact during upgrade events.3. Core Components - The Core Components team (3 employees) maintains the core libraries on which Looker runs, and ensures that they are up to date and secure. In 2023, we handled a number of major changes simultaneously, including an upgrade from JDK8 to JDK11, a major jRuby upgrade as well as a sizable investment in automated security scanning and remediation systems.Across all of these, I've maintained the highest employee satisfaction scores within Looker, and continued to show my ability to deliver work on time, on budget, and with empathy and happy employees. -
