I am the Director of Public Policy at NatWest Group (January 2020 - present). I previously worked for fifteen years in politics and journalism. I sit on the boards of Oxford University’s Business Economic Programme and the amazing start-up Fresh Car Valeting. I previously served on RBS’ Scotland Board and the Citizens Advice Edinburgh Board. I studied at the University of St Andrews and recently completed a course on climate change at Cambridge University’s Institute of Sustainable Leadership. Engagement:I am responsible for all of NatWest Group’s political interactions including managing our CEO Alison Rose’s political engagements and profile and providing analysis and counsel to the Group’s senior leadership team on politics. Climate:I proposed, secured and activated NatWest Group’s sponsorship of COP26 and have helped drive the Group’s climate communications strategy since the start of 2021. Enterprise:I established our highly successful Entrepreneurial Accelerators in twelve locations across the UK, which now support thousands of start-ups. Regional:I manage the strategic direction of our brilliant seven Regional Boards across the UK, which play such an important part in supporting communities the length and breadth of the UK. Brand:I led the communications around our name change from RBS Group to NatWest Group. General:I have worked at the bank for eleven years. Before that I was a broadcast journalist for fifteen years working as STV's Westminster Correspondent and then Political Correspondent. I presented most of STV's flagship political shows, many of which were live, audience-based programmes.I moved to the Conservative Party in 2009 as Director of Strategy and Communications in Scotland where I worked closely with David Cameron, his Shadow Cabinet team and Scotland’s leadership team. Former Chancellor George Osborne wrote: I have always found Michael to be professional, efficient and effective. In our dealings he was always focussed, well organised and had a clear strategic vision. He was able to deal with complicated and difficult situations and find the best way forward. With his media background he also has a good understanding of the press and is able to deal effectively with the media.
