Tim joined the Centre for Railway Engineering at Central Queensland University in 2001 to follow his interests in the area of civil rail infrastructure research, taking on the role of Research Academic in 2002, and subsequently moving to the Rail CRC in early 2004 to assist it with the management of its national rail research programme. He rejoined the Centre for Railway Engineering in 2005 in the position of Research Support Officer, and retired from paid employment at the end of 2007. Tim was appointed an Adjunct Research Fellow at the Centre for Railway Engineering for a term of 3 years from 13 February 2008 and this has since been further extended for four similar terms to 7 March 2023. He now dedicates a substantial amount of time to assisting CQUni postgraduate engineering students with finalising their theses, and helps both students and staff finalise technical publications, grant submissions and consultancy proposals. Tim was awarded an Honorary Master of Engineering degree by CQUniversity in 2011. He assisted CRE as a member of the organising committees for the 1998 Conference on Railway Engineering (CORE98) at Capricorn International Resort in Yeppoon and the 25th International Symposium on Dynamics of Vehicles on Roads and Tracks (IAVSD2017) at the Rockhampton North campus of CQUniversity.

CQ Diabetes Group is a non-profit diabetes charity and support group raising diabetes awareness in the Central Queensland community, organising educational camps for children and young adults with diabetes and promoting improved health for adults with Type 1 diabetes through education, social networking and self-help group meetings.Annual Diabetes Camps alternating between Rockhampton and Bundaberg are run by local volunteer clinical staff to provide kids and young adults with diabetes authentic self-management learning away from their home environment to improve their control of their diabetes. The camps promote healthy meal planning and balanced diet choices and provide full supervision with a weekend full on fun and recreational experiences.

Tim worked as a Volunteer in Policing, assisting the Capricornia District Crime Prevention Unit with various projects aimed at reducing the level of crime in the local community. This included following up additional information with victims of property crime and undertaking free home and business security audits for any interested party to advise on actions that would reduce the chances of their premises being broken into or vehicles entered/stolen. Tim also helped with a radar speed awareness programme at the many 40kph school speed zones in the Rockhampton/Capricorn Coast/Mount Morgan area to educate road users about the need for the reduction of speed through these zones which is a critical safety issue for schoolchildren.

Safe Night Precincts (SNPs) were established at 15 locations across Queensland in consultation with industry and the local community to facilitate safe and effective local management of key entertainment precincts. Within the SNPs, a wide range of stakeholders including liquor licensees, local businesses and Chambers of Commerce, State and local government agencies and community support providers work together, contributing to the Queensland Government’s Safe Night Out Strategy objective of ensuring safe and supportive entertainment precincts by putting in place planning and management initiatives to address community safety issues and amenity.

Tim McSweeney has over 30 years practical hands-on experience in the field of railway fixed infrastructure asset management, specialising particularly in track engineering in the heavy-haul environment. He was the senior Infrastructure Manager overseeing the Bowen Basin coal network for Queensland Rail from 1991 until 2001, developing cost-effective maintenance management strategies during a period of rapid growth in export traffic. Tim is a Member of the Railway Technical Society of Australasia and a Fellow of the Permanent Way Institution, Queensland Division.
