I have more than 20 years of experience leading research teams to study the effects of global change on human and ecosystem health. As a professor and lab director at an R1 research university, my responsibilities include writing grant proposals to secure external funding, recruiting and managing research staff and students, directing research projects, publishing the results of these projects in the scientific literature, and developing and delivering courses to university students and training to external partners. My research combines big geospatial datasets derived from satellite Earth observations with machine learning and other cutting-edge analytical tools to address critical problems in public health and natural resource management. I study the influences of climate and land use change on outbreaks of infectious diseases, including malaria in Africa and India and West Nile virus in the United States. I also explore the interactions of climate change with urbanization, deforestation, and wildfires in diverse landscapes across the globe. In carrying out this work, I have collaborated with a diverse array of stakeholders to co-develop data products and software tools that inform and improve decision-making.
