Md Aktaruzzaman has been employed as a senior Postdoctoral fellow at the Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center of Indina University School of Medicine since Sept 2022. He has been working on skin sympathetic nerve activity (SKNA) and heart rate variability (HRV) analysis of cardiac patients, specially the patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and cardiac arrest. Heart rate variability is a commonly used method to estimate cardiac autonomic tone. Sinus node function may be abnormal in heart failure or AF patients and HRV parameters may not reflect the sympathetic tone in those conditions. Sympathetic tone is important in cardiac arrhythmogenesis, and sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) can be determined from the recordings obtained from the skin. An alternative method of SNA recording is to use microneurography to directly measure SNA in humans. However, this invasive procedures and cannot be done in ambulatory subjects. The research labs at the Krannert Institute of Cardiology have found that both subcutaneous nerve activity (ScNA) and sympathetic nerve activity recorded from the skin (SKNA) closely correlated with stellate ganglia nerve activity (SGNA) in ambulatory canine models, and a method (neuECG) was developed to record electrocardiogram (ECG) and SKNA simultaneously on the skin surface using conventional ECG patch electrodes. SKNA recordings were then validated and translated to human patients and it was recently documented that sympathetic nerve activity correlates to the onset of atrial and ventricular arrhythmias. In this project, we are working on SKNA recordings to be used as a biomarker for neurological status in patients that are undergoing targeted temperature management (TTM) for cardiac arrest and to risk stratify patients for AF recurrence after undergoing ablation therapy. The major roles I played explicitly in this project includes data acquisition (ECG, SKNA, and Procedural data) before and after the procedure and during the procedure (ablation), data processing, analysis, and prediction.
