Global climate change is the most pressing concern facing human civilization in modern times. The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change calls it “the defining issue of our time” and recently released a special report1 highlighting the urgency of the threat. The Panel’s report calls for a concerted, multi-sector international effort to keep global warming to no more than 1.5 °C above pre-industrial levels, consistent with the goals of the Paris Agreement on climate change. Although we are already beginning to see the effects of global warming in phenomena such as extreme weather events, diminished crop yields and severe coastal flooding, holding the line at 1.5 °C has the potential to avert or mitigate some of the more catastrophic consequences. To this end, the report presents a series of far-ranging social, political, and technological recommendations, roughly organized into three complementary categories: energy supply, energy demand, and land Porphyrins (Pors) and phthalocyanines (Pcs) comprise a class of light absorbing molecules that are closely related to the pigments found in natural photosynthetic systems. As such, they are the archetypes for global scale CO2 fixation and energy production. These compounds have been extensively studied for applications ranging from cancer therapy to catalysis to direct photovoltaic solar energy conversion.They offer a versatile, tunable platform for the developments of a wide range of molecular and polymeric materials. Aside from their convenient and malleable photochemical properties, these porphyrinoids naturally lend themselves to complex hierarchical organization that offers another mechanism for fine-tuning their material properties.
