Switched from a single production server to Kubernetes and containers, easily handling a dramatic increase in load as the company regularly exceeded its sales goals. Grew the engineering team by hiring excellent developers and QA, instituting a culture of formal code design and testing. Developed the engineering team’s remote working practices. Led the push to SOC2 and HIPAA certification, hired the company’s first security director and created a culture of data safety and awareness. Created the company’s first detailed product roadmap. Developed the 3rd party integration tool kit and deployed it on our partner’s call center stack, using Zingtree’s decision tree product to dramatically cut call center staff’s training time. As tech leader, helped the CEO raise both the Seed round and the Series A, which became over-subscribed.

Tidebreak is the leading provider of technology for walk-up collaboration, targeted at higher education. Led the product planning function, collaborating closely with the technical team to determine product feature priorities and overall schedule. Since Tidebreak was a tiny startup, also helped code features. Created UX, as well as all corporate graphic design components. Created all product messaging and marketing materials. Designed, installed and manned tradeshow exhibits, engaging directly with customers to understand their needs and promote products. Developed key product features (Java), as well as tablet-based version of the client software (Hybrid HTML/Javascript). Implemented structured, systematic QA process and comprehensive test scripts.

Created app specification, UI design and all graphics for the M Group's first iPhone app. Coded entire app in Objective C. Designed and coded push notification back-end web system using Apple Push Notification System (APNS).

Advised wireless calendaring developer how to best target and serve mobile users. Advised early stage companies about software product design, with an emphasis on quality user experience and pragmatic development cycles. Designed and executed web sites and branding across a spectrum of client types.

Founding VP of Product Management, set up product development process across three geographically separated offices. Responsible for all company's server and publishing platform products. Created product requirements and specifications to fit customer needs. Tracked development progress of all products and communicated with stakeholders. Helped unify 3 independent development teams located in different cities into a single cohesive team with common processes; worked with teams to resolve issues affecting progress and morale. With CTO, pushed cross-discipline effort to redesign server product into a new category management product that became company's key focus. Personally created specifications for co-branded games and trivia for movie cross-promotions with Cingular, demonstrating new business opportunities.

HandsOn was a wireless internet startup delivering actionable content directly to mobile devices. Founded at the end of the dotcom boom, it was purchased by eFund LLC to create MFORMA. As the technology visionary and "product guy," managed user experience and feature design, product requirements and overall development schedule. Developed user interface engine and user interface. Designed and executed corporate web site, marketing materials and presentations. As key member of founding team, instrumental in pitching technology and raising initial funding; co-wrote original business plan and funding materials; as technology spokesman, was integral to successfully selling company in a "down" market. As product visionary, created initial functional specification (including web and handheld device user interfaces) and guided development decisions. Designed concept for XML/XSL-based device-neutral system for user interface presentation and created user experience design.

Responsible for vision, business plan, specification, schedule, market positioning and sales collateral for all of Geoworks' platform products. Interfaced daily with 3 development teams, troubleshooting design and progress issues; regularly communicated project status to management. Provided key sales support, including customer presentations and demos. Worked with engineering to implemented flexible development methodology of frequent prototyping and continuous incremental improvement to allow product to adapt to emerging customer needs. Managed relationships with external technology providers. Developed marketing materials and sales kits for Geoworks' entire product line. Championed exciting new user experience paradigm for low-end phones based on HTML, rich graphics, animation and personalization; co-founded 10 person team and guided design, created demos, and pitched product to Japanese and European phone manufacturers.

Responsible for Geoworks flagship product. For each release, wrote vision and requirements documents, created overall development schedules, shepherded release through development and testing processes, and created marketing materials and sales kits. Spearheaded creation of new “clean sheet” OS product in response to changing market needs, which became company’s flagship OS. Working with development team, instituted new development process based on thorough requirements documents, detailed schedules, comprehensive specifications and systematic QA. Helped license OS to Toshiba, then managed project relationship and cooperative engineering effort with Toshiba, forging long-term relationship with company; represented Geoworks at monthly project reviews in Japan.

Led the team responsible for software specifications, user interface design and testing, user manuals and retail box design. Managed large-scale documentation projects with OS licensees. Hired and managed internal team. Selected external writing teams, approved scope of work, ran weekly progress meetings, signed off on all deliverables and invoices. Built the group from one writer to a team of designers, writers and artists. Instituted comprehensive functional specifications for applications, reducing development time and improving end-user experience. Created methodologies for user interface design and usability testing that emphasized quick results and low cost.

Systems analyst, user interface designer, and lead developer for internal development team. Managed 6 developers. Created and oversaw development of new financial aid management system running on network of PCs, which increased productivity and reliability and dramatically lowered MIS costs. This was the first administrative system at UC Irvine to be completely hosted on low-cost PCs instead of expensive mainframe computers. Assigned project tasks to developers based on skill fit and oversaw projects to completion. Started integration of innovative scanning system which enabled student paperwork to be scanned and stored digitally, and recalled from any PC as needed; virtually eliminated paper files from the office. Designed and coded a message-oriented text-screen windowing application framework in COBOL that was versatile enough to remain in use for a decade; this system provided a windows, menu and mouse pointer-based interface for DOS-based PCs.
