About Michael Harvey

“’The time has come’ the walrus said, to talk of many things…”—Lewis Carroll, “The Walrus and The Carpenter,” from “Through the Looking Glass,” chapter 4.I am not just another suit."Methinks he doth protest too much?"—Shakespeare.I actually truly no longer am a suit. I never intended to become a businessperson. Nevertheless, except for four years living aboard our cruising sailboat, my entire career has been in the software industry. It's been an amazing run & the last 14 yrs at Corra helping to lead & grow & sell the business was an amazing experience. I guess I actually got pretty good at business.I am now actively looking for oppty's to put that experience to use at non-profits in areas that are important to me: the Arts, the environment, and social justice. I am also looking for board seats with companies whose mission promotes “leaving a clean wake” in the world. But I foresee much of my effort going towards creative pursuits: music (songwriting, composing, producing), audio & video, and writing. My Clean Wake initiative provides an umbrella for these activities & I will be setting up a non-profit (Clean Wake Media) to provide a formal structure for promoting the greater good through right action and intentional living.Until I start making waves with “leaving a clean wake,” however, (pun intended), I’ll have to rest on prior laurels. To wit:I've held operational roles as a senior executive at organizations large & small. I've sailed a boat from Seattle to Nova Scotia via the Panama canal with my wife and two young daughters. It took 4 years. Sailboats go really, really slow. I went to Stanford. I've worked at IBM, JP Morgan, Microsoft, and Corra. My 2nd daughter, Rhiannon, was born at home in our bed. That was planned. The midwife was late. That was not planned. I've helped startups raise and spend VC money. I've hired and fired people. I've been laid off myself. I met my wife 38 yrs ago in Vienna. My first daughter is named Vienna. Thank god we didn't meet in Bucharest. I've been married for 36 years. I still love my wife like crazy. I composed & recorded a musical score for a full length feature film. I wrote and sold a 5,000 word article about Soundgarden back when Grunge was cool. My blog is "Leaving a Clean Wake." The message at its simplest: don't throw plastic overboard. At its essence: be a good person. I started out as a pre-med but then hit organic chemistry. So I studied engineering instead. I've been a COO, a CMO, a CTO, and the Vice President Of Technology and Brand Globalization... I don't know what that means either.###

  • Clean Wake Media
    Chief Executive Officer/Co-Founder
Clean Wake Media Apr 2024 - Present
Clean Wake Media seeks to foster an appreciation for the cruising sailor's credo to "leave a clean wake." By creating content across a variety of channels—print, blog, podcast, video, social media, and more—we disseminate the clean wake ethos and provide practical, balanced, and non-preachy guidance and information to help others leave a clean wake as they sail through their lives. As Chief Business Guy and Evangelist, I am leading the various efforts to get this initiative underway, line up support, coordinate logistics, and generally get the word out. In addition to creating content ourselves, Clean Wake Media will provide a home for other creators and evangelists whose work aligns with and furthers our mission. We will partner with corporate, community, NGO, private foundation, and other organizations to spread the word and will be seeking sponsorships and grants to fund our work. In turn, we hope to be able to offer grants ourselves to others to support a thriving community of individuals and organizations dedicated to the proposition that one should try to leave the world a better place for one's passage through it. Our application for formal 501(c)(3) non-profit status is in process. For now we are in stealth mode readying some of our initial offerings—so stay tuned! If you want to be in the know when we start dropping content or soliciting proposals for grants, please sign up at www.leavingacleanwake.com.
  • Corra
Cto—Corra / Group Vice President, Commerce Technology—Publicis Sapient
    Corra Jun 2023 - Apr 2024
    New York, Us
Following the successful acquisition of Corra by Publicis Sapient (https://www.publicissapient.com/news/ps-acquires-corra) in June 2023, I continued in the role of Chief Technology Officer at Corra while also serving as a Group Vice President, Commerce Technology within the broader Publicis Sapient organization. As Corra's CTO, I held overall responsibility for the firm's global Technology organization with development centers in India, Europe, and the Americas spanning software engineering, solutions architecture, systems and business analysis, DevOps, QA, managed services, and technical support. Corra provides a 24/7/365 follow-the-sun delivery process supporting dozens of international brands, retailers, and B2B clients with their ecommerce technology requirements. As CTO, I brought a particular focus to furthering Corra's established leadership position within the rapidly evolving headless commerce/composable commerce space and served as the firm's internal stakeholder and external evangelist for our efforts and investment in PWA (Progressive Web App) and associated technologies. Corra works closely with the major headless commerce platforms including Adobe Commerce (Magento), Shopify Plus, commercetools, fabric, Contentful, Bloomreach and others.

  • Corra
    Chief Strategy Officer
    Corra Jan 2020 - Feb 2022
    New York, Us
After leading Corra's global Delivery organization as COO for 10 years and contributing to the firm's rapid growth and success as a Systems Integrator (SI), I originated a new role as Chief Strategy Officer (CSO) focused on driving the same success for our Digital Strategy, Digital Transformation, and Creative Services practice areas including: SEO; Data and Analytics; Business Intelligence (BI); Conversion Rate Optimization and Personalization; Customer Acquisition and Retention; Digital Marketing including Social Media and Content Strategy; and Visual, UX, CX, and Interaction Design for all devices and touchpoints that today's omnichannel merchants must employ. While Corra remains in close partnership with our key platform vendors, Strategy by its very nature can be somewhat technology-agnostic, particularly in a Headless, mobile-first world. Our goal is simple: remain an indispensable partner to our clients with best-in-class offerings in all of the key eCommerce disciplines necessary to deliver effective, data-driven customer experiences.
  • Corra
    Chief Operating Officer (Coo)
    Corra Dec 2009 - Jan 2020
    New York, Us
As COO for the past 10 years, I held operational responsibility for all of Corra's Delivery services including: Technology (development, systems integration, testing, DevOps); Business Analysis and Solution Architecture; Project Management; Design (UX, CX, Visual); and Strategy. I grew the Delivery team from a dozen employees to hundreds located in some of the world's most important cities, with commensurate growth in revenue and profit. Along the way, Corra became Adobe Commerce/Magento's largest and most decorated Solution Partner. We are repeating that performance with Adobe's broader technology portfolio, with Shopify, commercetools, and with other key platforms that today's omnichannel merchants require, whether B2C, D2C, or B2B. As a true full-service digital agency and systems integrator, we help our clients take advantage of Headless Commerce/Composable Commerce/MACH/Microservices/PWAs (Progressive Web Apps), and all of the touchpoints and channels that must be woven together to deliver a unified customer experience.
  • Operation Smile
Vice President Of Technology & Brand Globalization
    Operation Smile Jan 2009 - Jun 2009
    Virginia Beach, Va, Us
My mandate was to lead Operation Smile’s Digital Transformation by creating new channels to engage this global non-profit’s key stakeholder groups including donors, students, nurses, doctors, and other medical volunteers, thereby leading to increased donations and lifelong affiliations with the organization. Tools used included online communities, Social Business Software (SBS), social media, mobile devices, licensing & merchandising, an overhaul of the global web presence, and the development of an updated brand to form the cornerstone of the organization’s ongoing efforts to globalize all aspects of its operations.
  • Concursive Corporation
Evp | Chief Sales And Marketing Officer
    Concursive Corporation Feb 2005 - Jan 2009
    Norfolk, Va, Us
I held operational responsibility for all non-engineering functions including sales, strategy, marketing, product management, and professional services. I was instrumental in helping Concursive raise its Series-A funding round from Intel Capital. I led the development of the company's first Social Business Software/Online Community application (ConcourseConnect) launching the company into one of the fastest growing segments in the software industry. Concursive’s commercial open source technology comprised highly scalable enterprise level software built on a multi-tenant Java-based stack. While at Concursive (formerly Centric CRM), I conceived, co-founded, and sat on the board of the Open Solutions Alliance, a 501(c)(3) consortium of the industry’s leading open source platform vendors and systems integrators. The OSA actively developed the market for commercial open source software, and established business best practices for members and the industry at large.
  • Sailing Vessel Atalanta
    Skipper
Sailing Vessel Atalanta Jun 2001 - Oct 2005
When our daughters were five and seven, we left Seattle aboard Atalanta, a 43’ center-cockpit ketch made by Henri Wauquiez, the world’s leading designer and builder of blue water cruising sailboats. We named her "Atalanta" for the ancient Greek heroine and demi-goddess who could run as fast as the wind. Talk about Girl Power.I was skipper, my wife first mate, and as a short-handed crew trading watch-on-watch, we navigated storms and coral passes and dead calms and more beautiful sunsets and starry nights than we ever imagined one life could hold. For the next four years, we more or less circumnavigated North and Central America via the Panama Canal, skipping the icy bits. Mayan ruins, remote fishing villages, dolphins in the bow wave, the Southern Cross, close encounters with container ships, the Erie Canal, coral reefs, lifelong friends, Spanish lessons, storms at sea, and an enduring appreciation for the immensity of the natural world and the astounding diversity of its inhabitants, large and small... this was our world for four unforgettable years where the highs were ineffably high and the lows were indescribably low.I hope to do something as interesting again before I die, but I will never regret interrupting my career to lead an adventure that, to this day, forms part of the bedrock of my family’s self-identity.
  • M.D.Harvey & Company, Inc.
    Founder/President
    M.D.Harvey & Company, Inc. Jan 1995 - May 2001
    Us
I founded m.d.harvey as a boutique consultancy providing strategic planning services for the first wave of Seattle Internet companies before the dot com bubble burst: Real Networks, Corbis, Expedia, WRQ, Microsoft (RealCD anyone??), and others. I also helped launch the nationally renowned Port Townsend Film Festival during this time, in addition to running Moose Leap Studios (a small project recording studio), composing for film and video, and publishing articles about the intersection of culture and technology for both the trade and general press.
  • Microsoft
Group Manager, Consumer Products, Nordic Region
    Microsoft 1993 - 1994
    Redmond, Washington, Us
I was recruited by Microsoft’s Nordic Region leadership for a one year foreign assignment to grow a consumer products division. I built a multidisciplinary team including sales, channel partnerships, and product marketing to bring Microsoft’s full suite of applications for home and small business to the entire Scandinavian market. I also played a leadership role within the overall European consumer products operation from a strategy and market development perspective.
  • Microsoft
    Product Manager
    Microsoft 1989 - 1994
    Redmond, Washington, Us
I held diverse Product Management roles with increasing levels of responsibility—including growing and managing ever larger teams—across multiple divisions in the company. I began my career in Building 1 a few doors down from Steve Ballmer where I helped launch LAN Manager, the precursor to Windows NT, into the retail enterprise software market. I ended my stint in the US in Building 10 as part of the team that conceived, designed, and launched Microsoft’s first ever products for children. In between, I worked for Melinda Gates running the team that launched other new products such as Microsoft Publisher into the consumer market. Next stop, Stockholm...
  • J.P. Morgan
    Assistant Treasurer
    J.P. Morgan Sep 1987 - May 1989
    New York, Ny, Us
I joined JP Morgan just in time to experience the panic of Black Monday first hand. But I also got to see the invention of the Interest Rate Swap, the world’s first synthetic security. Fortunately, as an Investment Advisor within the brand new Securities division, I was part of a dynamic Investment Banking and Trading team with nothing but growth ahead of it. In my specific role, I performed fundamental and quantitative analysis for the bank's institutional investment advisory service.
