In addition to my day job as a Chartered Structural Engineer I also provide contract geotechnical engineering services under supervision of a Chartered Geotechnical Engineer. My work in this role has included undertaking hundreds of site-specific geotechnical tests in addition to site-specific and subdivision-wide deep testing (CPT) and liquefaction assessments using CLiq.

TM Consultants is a Christchurch based company of highly experienced multi-disciplined engineers.Members of the team have been the structural, services and energy consultants for numerous award winning designs in competitions throughout the country and offer a broad range of engineering services, with experience in all areas of the building industry throughout New Zealand.During my six years in the geotechnical department of TM Consultants I managed a team of three other employees to test residential and commercial sites. Typical testing required the use of a hand-wound auger to investigate soil types and scala penetrometer testing for ground bearing. The work also included assessing the sites for geotechnical hazards, and writing reports summarising the investigative work.During my time with TM Consultants I prepared and distributed site-specific geotechnical reports for over 1,000 properties. I developed my own spreadsheet system to display the results, leading to a remarkable improvement in the efficiency of the creation of these reports. This system allowed me to write and distribute a report in one third of the time previously considered standard, adding great value for both the company and our clients. As an employee of TM, and with the requirement of accompaniment by a CPEng structural engineer I was granted access to the Christchurch City Centre ‘Red Zone’ as a safety engineer. I was responsible for keeping track of the movements of members of recovery and investigative groups to best secure safety in the event of an emergency.

Over the 2013/14 Summer Holidays I worked as a Labourer for Whyte Construction. I worked on a variety of projects including both residential and commercial earthquake repairs. Many of these projects required concrete crack epoxy injection, and I produced an instruction guide for detailing the procedures involved in injection.
