Research AssistantBerke Organic Biogeochemistry And Paleoclimatology Lab May 2015 - May 2017Conducted field research sampling a gradient of lakes in the Upper Peninusla, WI/MI that examined the organic carbon burial efficiency of lacustrine sediment as a carbon sink. Performed biomarker tests on sediment (spectroscopy, extraction, and elemental analysis). Freshwater lacustrine sediment plays a disproportionately large role as a global carbon sink, thus assisting in climate change mitigation.Findings: significant results in the higher burial efficiency of lakes with higher DOC levels, as well as the increased burial efficiency of sediments at the bathymetric center of lakes as opposed to the perimeter. These conclusions could assist in artificial carbon sequestration processes, as well as promoting the need to preserve freshwater lakes, due to the immense carbon storage services they provide.Completed Honors Thesis, May 2017: Exploring the Factors That Impact Organic Carbon Burial Efficiency in Lacustrine Sediment.

Research TechnicianHellmann Climate Lab May 2014 - May 2015Assigned to work with the Karner Blue Butterfly project, funded by the United States Geological Survey. The project dealt with the survivorship of the Karner Blue (L. melissa samuelis), a critically endangered species of butterfly, and its response to climate change. Duties include: raising and breeding a captive population of several generations of Karner Blue butterflies within the laboratory, as well as recording data on growth and development rates, mass, fertility rates, fecundity rates, voltinism, mating behaviors, diapause interactions, and temperature changes. - July 2014: Performed assisted reintroduction of numerous endangered Karner Blue individuals into the wild with a team of ecologists at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore. - August 2014: presented findings at the Summer Undergraduate Research Symposium (SURS).- Fall 2014: Examined past fertility and fecundity rates of L. melissa samuelis by using past generational data and comparing the effects of inbreeding on the population. - Spring 2015: Researched the Karner Blue's only host plant, Wild Blue Lupine. Analyzed chlorphyll and nitrogen/carbon readings from lupine leaf samples taken at various locations and dates in the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and explored the impact of a changing habitat (due to climate change) on the Karner's singular source of food. Presented this work as a biology speaker at the College of Science Joint Annual Meeting (COS-JAM).
