About Meagan Cummins

There is so much potential for discovery and insight in taking a look at what's trending. But in food and drink, sometimes it's important to launch a pear flavor because that's your favorite Jelly Belly bean. What's going to be the next big flavor, what are the top claims in a category (and more importantly, what do consumers think that claim means), and what even is sustainability messaging? I love to explore the world of food and drink through data ... and better yet love talking with people about it.Communication is at the core of everything we do, and the human experiences behind the data we see every day is what interpretation is all about. Reach out if there's a project I can help you with!

The SGA identifies routes to positively enact change in the University from the student perspective. The Academic Affairs Committee works closely with the administration and students to adjust curriculum, student accessibility in the classroom, and registrar services. In my role as the Chair of the Academic Affairs Committee, I: -Listened to student groups across campus to identify systemic issues with student academics at UVM and met with administrators to develop action plans on how to address needs.-Delegated projects to other members of the committee to effectively address the vision of set projects-Held committee meetings weekly to check in on goals and Senator's mental health and wellbeing-Attended weekly executive team meetings to communicate our progress and gather information about big picture needs-Dove into paper records dating back to the 1980's to establish the history of student access to course evaluations to determine whether students could obtain more transparency despite objections relating to retention, tenure, and promotion. -Guided a first year student on how to develop a productive first year FAQ sheet to aid in an easier transition to campus life by modeling goal-setting and setting up meetings

Student Admissions Ambassador (Advocat)

Burlington, Vermont, United States

The AdvoCats are a group of current UVM students who provide prospective students with a window into what it is like to be a part of UVM's community. With more than sixty students on staff, the AdvoCats bring a slew of diversity, perspective, and humor for visitors. AdvoCats are often the most personal contact incoming students will have with UVM, so working closely with the Office of Admissions to provide an information-rich narrative to form connections is imperative. Working as an AdvoCat I learned and grew by: -Leading tours for prospective students and their families-Hosting accessible open houses and being chosen to speak on panels ranging from 2 to 2,000 visitors-Managing peers as a Tour Tier Captain by providing support, open communication avenues, and accountabilityDuring monthly staff development meetings, we were able to learn from different professionals on campus including the communications department and a theater professor. From these meetings, I was able to advance my skills as an orator by being more intentional with body language and messaging while being fluid and adaptable.

Student Curator

Burlington, Vermont, United States

Kelley Helmstutler DiDio's course Art History 285: Museum Studies focused on how museums function as platforms to preserve history and tell stories, and how many communities are misinterpreted or left out of museum spaces. Through the lens of Aruna D'Souza's book Whitewalling: Art, Race, & Protest we examined museum practices of inclusion and exclusion of artists, visitors, and narratives of different groups of people. While learning about how museums uphold structures of power each week, students worked closely with the staff of the Robert Hull Fleming Museum to curate, research, and display works in the vein of protest art. As a class we pitched our show to the Fleming and they chose to pick up our idea. The "RESIST! INSIST! PERSIST!" exhibition ran from September 27 to December 13, 2019 and helped inspire a complimentary exhibit "Be Strong and do Not Betray Your Soul" across the marble hall. It examined protest and power through four windows: race, gender, the state, and class. Through this class and the process of creating "RESIST! INSIST! PERSIST!" I was able to pick up valuable skills by: -Critically reading about race, gender, sexuality, and class to incorporate themes into my research about objects and wall text in the exhibit-Utilizing a 3D space to convey abstract themes through placement, text, and order by creating a mock up of the exhibition space-Pitching a fully developed concept including research, wall text, a catalogue, educational materials, and themes to a board of professionals in the fieldThis experience was incredibly meaningful and helped spark an interest in applied sciences in provenance research and conservation science.

General Editor

Universtiy Of Vermont Honors College

Burlington, Vermont, United States

In Kelley Helmstutler DiDio's course Honors College: 185: Art & Its Destruction, writing a book about the Confederate monuments took the place of a final exam. Students worked together to bring about a book that explored case studies across the United States about how Confederate monuments came to be and the debates surrounding them. Confederate Monuments: Revisiting our History presents arguments for preserving the monuments and for tearing them down. It explores questions including the kinds of harm that Confederate monuments cause, what to do with the monuments if they are taken down, and how state owned versus privately owned statues function differently. As the General Editor of this project, I: -Lead and supported groups of students working in areas including research, citations, media permissions and image rights, and layout-Organized due dates and provided accountability for the project-Stepped in to assist groups when they fell behind schedule or fell into a rut, and encouraged groups when they were doing an excellent job-Compiled all of the submitted media from student groups in a document suitable to submit to the self-publishing platform CreateSpace
